NATIONAL MOON DAY

National Moon Day is observed annually on July 20 and commemorates the day man first walked on the moon in 1969. NASA reported the moon landing as being “…the single greatest technological achievement of all time.”

NATIONAL MOON DAY HISTORY

In 1971, President Richard Nixon proclaimed National Moon Landing Day on July 20 to commemorate the anniversary of man’s first moon landing.

With no continuing proclamation to follow, Richard Christmas took up the baton and began a “Christmas Card” writing campaign. A former gas station attendant, the Michigan native wrote to governors, congressmen and senators in all 50 states urging them to create National Moon Day. By July of 1975, 12 states had sponsored bills observing Moon Day.

Nixon: Hello, Neil and Buzz. I'm talking to you by telephone from the Oval Room at the White House. And this certainly has to be the most historic telephone call ever made. I just can't tell you how proud we all are of what you've done. For every American, this has to be the proudest day of our lives. And for people all over the world, I am sure they too join with Americans in recognizing what an immense feat this is. Because of what you have done, the heavens have become a part of man's world. And as you talk to us from the Sea of Tranquility, it inspires us to redouble our efforts to bring peace and tranquility to Earth. For one priceless moment in the whole history of man, all the people on this Earth are truly one: one in their pride in what you have done, and one in our prayers that you will return safely to Earth.

Armstrong: Thank you, Mr. President. It's a great honor and privilege for us to be here, representing not only the United States, but men of peace of all nations, and with interest and curiosity, and men with a vision for the future. It's an honor for us to be able to participate here today.

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Christmas in July.

Luke 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

I never knew there was a Moon Day declared.
I do recall the immense pride and excitement I felt as I stood in the living room with my family, and watched the landing on TV. I remain proud of what American engineers proved capable of doing, getting us into orbit, and launching satelites. I remain ‘puzzled’ that we have never gone back, nor has any other country claimed to have touched down on the Lunar surface.

Historical context: Just two days earlier, Teddy Swimmer Kennedy drove off a bridge on Chappaquiddick and left Mary Jo Kopechne to die in his submerged Oldsmobile.

The moon landing instantly drew media coverage away from Kennedy and onto the Apollo 11 crew until their return from space, giving his handlers enough time to assemble their version of what had happened.

But the Swimmer would go on to spend the next forty years in the Senate making liberal evil.

My son works at NASA. My s=wife texted to day and asked if anyone brought cupcakes to celebrate.

Bye the way, I don’t think the moon landing was the most impressive technological achievement in history. I believe Apollo 13 was more impressive. The spacecraft blew up and they still got home safely.

I remain ‘puzzled’ that we have never gone back, nor has any other country claimed to have touched down on the Lunar surface.

Twelve men have stood on the moon, all Americans. The first lunar module was named the Eagle, the first command module the Columbia.

The span of the mission was the same as "The Nine Days", with the safe return occurring on Tisha B'Av.

The first words spoken from the moon were of celestial origin, literally. The mission and the famous words were all about returning and rectification, transcending earthly business as usual. Tranquility Base calling in from the Sea of Tranquility, the splashdown in Pacific ocean, all the same message as President Nixon's phone call to the moon.

A small step and a giant leap, all in one light step off of an eagle, the symbol of America.

It was an important statement for the entire world to hear and witness.

49 years, going on 50.

The two men in white sure caused everyone on the entire planet to "look up", yet who was actually watching?

One interesting detail (one of many) in the audio just prior to landing, was the statement by Aldrin:

413 is in”, which told Eagle’s Abort Guidance System to remember the attitude of the vehicle on the surface.

Pronounced "four-thirteen". That was the date the following year when everyone on earth was looking up to the heavens yet again because Apollo 13 had a "problem."

Then there was the matter of the 1201 and 1202 alarms:

"But when they saw the 1202 and 1201 program alarms it was the real thing, which meant the right response was completing the mission objective. They weren’t going to give up on landing on the Moon if they didn’t have to."

http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/vintagespace/2018/01/05/apollo-11s-1202-alarm-explained

Rev 12:01 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
Rev 12:02 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.

The cosmos is a classroom.

Great timing. I just mentioned Apollo 13 in the post right after yours.

Sooo... did they bring cupcakes? Or at least perhaps some vintage Tang. :)

Haha, from the Tang wiki page:

In 2013, former NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin said “Tang sucks.”

Tha Apollo Moon era began when the Apollo 11 mission Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) wIth the call-sign of “Eagle” landed at Mare Tranquillitatis (Sea of Tranquility) [aka Tranquility Base] on Sunday, 20 July 1969 at 20:17:40 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) which was 4:17:40 pm EST. Neil Armstrong made the first human footstep on the Moon at 02:56:15 UTC 21 July / 10:56:15 pm EST 20 July 1969.

It ended with the launch of the LEM “Challenger” upper/return stage of the Apollo 17 mission at 22:54:37 UTC on 14 December 1972. The total of this manned Moon Landing era was 7 missions with one (Apollo 13) abort, 12 American Astronaut Moon walkers and a gazillion gripes about the failures to follow-up. The last human footstep left on the Moon from that mission was from Eugene Cernan at 04:35 UTC / 12:35 am 14 December 1972.

This day next year (2019) will mark a half century since Neil Armstrong made that first human footprint on Luna. As it now stands, in all probability, 14 December 2022 will be long gone before the NEXT human sets foot on the Moon.

I SINCERELY HOPE I AM WRONG WITH MY PESSIMISM HERE!
