Bethesda Commits To Single-Player, But "Be Patient" For Elder Scrolls 6, Bosses Say

"We've been talking about it for a decade, we started putting things on paper five, six years ago, and active development was from when we finished Fallout 4, so two and a half, three years," Howard told The Guardian. "Everyone should be very patient [for Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6]. It's gonna take a while for what we have in mind to come out."

"Games have gotten so big and interesting that they've moved beyond the toy/entertainment space," he said. "It's not just a diversion from their regular lives; for a lot of people it becomes an important part of their lives. I think we see that across a lot of games now, where people are getting joy and personal pride out of the time they spend in them ... Games are unique in that. They can put you in a place; they transport you. That's why we've always done big, open-world stuff: it's what a game does really well. We like technology, we like storytelling, we like art. But saying, 'Hey, look what we made the game do'--that is, on a day-to-day basis, on a week-to-week basis, the most rewarding."

All that means the company's long-term plans are pretty well set, which echoes what we've heard before. In June, Howard told us that he already knows the release date for Elder Scrolls 6, but that it would be "foolish" to say it now.

I’m not sure that I can stop playing Monster Hunter World long enough to play Elder Scrolls 6...

This is a symptom not a cause.

Virtual worlds are the only place a lot of people can go these days where they’re not told they’re evil for being white or male.

Not like the progressive Left isn’t trying to invade that space, too, but they’re getting serious pushback. Look up “GamerGate” for more info.

I am not sure but I think Bethesda's Fallout 76 is going to be a disaster. No single player, all online. I don't want to play a Fallout game where I just get shot all the time by people. I want to do quests and build stuff. And not get killed over and over and over by some jerk who wants to get his K/D ration up. I think a lot of Fallout players feel the same. And I like mods too but can't have them in multiplayer. I suspect they are getting similar feedback from other players.

Which is why they are backtracking on multiplayer in their other games and now trying to explain how Fallout 76 can still be eventually played as single player if you want a private server and only interact with monsters and animals in the game since there are no human NPCs.

My bet is that Fallout 76 is a bomb.

Anything that pulls entertainment dollars away from liberals isn’t likely to be too bad.

I have only played a racing game in a multiplayer setting.

All others are solo.

“WTH is this all about???????”

It’s about people, including some Freepers unfortunately, that don’t want to deal with the real world and want to escape to virtual ones inside some computer screen.

They probably couldn’t tell you who Ben Franklin was or who fought in their grandfathers’ World War II, but they are experts in computer games.

They probably never went outside to play when they were growing up, which in retrospect, they apparently never have.

There is still an audience. Look at PUBG, Fortnite, Planetside, etc., and a good chunk of the fantasy MMO PVP crowd. It’ll likely bomb for classic Fallout folks, but may succeed with a different group of players.

Fallout 76 can still be played by yourself. They’ve made that quite clear- it’s basically a fallout 4 co-op/multi expansion. They’re giving to people what they have wanted forever and that is to play Fo4 with their friends. The building of bases/community stuff it will all still be there from what I read.

I agree with you, I do not like the multi-player games because I take my time in playing and only have a session once or twice a week. Multi-player would have me playing constantly to keep up with me ‘group’ and I won’t do that.

So because of that I won’t be buying or playing Fallout 76.

Wow. Generalize much? I play about 15 hours weekly, hunt during the season, fish a few times a month, shoot competitively, am married with a decent job, built my own house, and actually have impeccable history. Top of my class all through school in that and math, actually.

Go troll somewhere else.

Bill, you sound like a liberal trying to put everyone in a box. FYI, freepers who “hide behind” computer screens are some of the most intelligent people on this site. We’re quite aware who our founding fathers were, and btw- my grandfather fought under 12th armored div which was 3rd army under Patton for the later half of the war. My grandfather was wounded at the battle of Herrlisheim which you’ve probably never even heard of ;-)
