Fat tourists leave Greek island donkeys CRIPPLED
Express ^ | July 31, 2018 | John Fitzpatrick

More than 1,000 tourists a day visit the island of Santorini from cruise ships in the peak season.

They use traditional transport on the hilly terrain - where cars cannot go - and are attracted to idyllic white houses in places such as the principal town of Fira.

Every day the donkeys make four to five journeys up its 520 white cobbled steps in temperatures of up to 86F (30C).

Animal rights activists claim donkeys are increasingly left with spinal injuries and open wounds from ill-fitting saddles.

They say that, with obesity on the rise, the animals are being forced to carry ever-heavier loads while they work long hours, seven days a week without shelter, rest and water.

The Help the Santorini Donkeys charity is calling for an eight-stone load restriction as the number of overweight tourists arriving from the UK, US and Russia has trebled in the past 10 years.

Last time I went Horseback riding, they had a weight limit to protect the horses.

Fat people should be mindful of their condition.

Really sad. They should have a weight limit. Period. Since when does Europe not have all those standards? When I was there, if an American ordered a fancy expensive meal and then wanted to wash it down with Coca Cola, the chef would throw him right out!

eight-stone = 112 lbs.

Everyone, raise your hand if you weigh under 112 lbs...

I have walked the donkey trail at Santorini.

It wasn’t pretty.

“(Donkeys should carry no more than 20 percent of their own body weight, according to the charity Help the Santorini Donkeys.)”

Absolute nonsense! The animal rights activists are doing this with horses, too. They make up a figure - some 20%, others say 15%, and some even 10% - and then say no one should ride a horse if they weigh over that. There is no scientific data supporting those limits.

Donkeys are not walmart carts.

Make the fatsos walk and burn off some blubber.

John Wayne was a big guy & he has some OUTSTANDING horses at his disposal. I have watched a number of his movies where he seems to have ridden the same horse. This chestnut with the ‘high white’ markings is especially nice. Would love to have that horse myself.

I would bet that horse is packing around 300 pounds with all that gear, saddle & Wayne.

I used to compete in Endurance events-—long distance on horse back. I rode Australian Stock Saddles.

With everything the horse was carrying—bridle, breast collar, saddle, pad, gear attached to saddle & me at 130#, I weighed in at 186-189 at every ride. Aussie saddle are very comfortable.

Where are the weight limits-donkeys are little... When you rent a horse to ride on a trail trip in a lot of states, there are weight limits-last year on a camping trip to Guadalupe Mtns, my employer’s 260 lb wife was refused a horse for a trail trip, but at 170, he was just fine with getting one-she was insulted and pissed, but oh well...

Agreed, there should be a weight limit.

Uh, er, OK... but you might have to dig it up and brush off a lot of dirt before you go riding on it.
