Wraps And Salads Sold At Trader Joe’s, Other Major Retailers Recalled For Parasite Concern

(CBS News) — Federal officials are warning consumers to be on guard for signs of intestinal distress if they’ve eaten any of more than two dozen types of salads and wraps sold by several major retailers around the U.S.

In a public health alert issued Monday night, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) cited worries that beef, pork and poultry salad and wrap products may be infected by a parasite known as cyclospora cayetanenis.

Distributed nationwide by Caito Foods of Indianapolis, the possibly tainted products were sold by retailers including Kroger, Trader Joe’s and Walgreens. Caito learned of the problem when its supplier, Fresh Express, notified it of a recall involving some of the lettuce in products packaged under a variety of brand names.

All of the 25 product varieties are now out of date, produced from July 15 to 18 with the “Best By,” “Enjoy by,” Best if Sold By” or “Sell By” dates ranging from July 18 through July 23.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators and that consumers may be at risk due to the length of the cyclospora incubation period,” which ranges from two to 14 days, the agency stated.

Transmitted in foods tainted by fecal matter, cyclospora can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, body aches and fever a week or more after someone consumes food or liquid contaminated with the parasite.

Separately, officials are still working to determine a single source as causing a 15-state outbreak of cyclospora parasite infections tied to salads from McDonald’s. As of Thursday, 286 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclospora infection were reported in people who consumed salads from the fast-food chain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Caito Foods recently drew unwanted attention in a multi-state salmonella outbreak tied to recalled pre-cut melon that sickened 77 people in nine states.

“Cyclospora cayetanensis is a protozoan that causes disease in humans, and perhaps primates. It has been linked in the United States to fecally contaminated imported produce, and was virtually unknown before about 1990, but has been on the rise since. The health risk associated with the disease is usually confined to adult foreigners visiting regions where the species is endemic and acquiring the infection; consequently, C. cayetanensis is a cause of “traveler’s diarrhea”. “

This protozoan is one of the causes of Montezuma’s Revenge.

You used to have to go to Mexico for it, but now our No Border’s Republicans and Sanctuary City Democrats have given it a home here.

Trump could have already built The Wall if Ryan and McConnell their treasonous ilk weren’t opposed to it.

The only meaningful useful news I can think of on this subject is as follows : How many people have died in the last 11+ years from eating prepackaged fruit and vegetable salads in the U.S.?

Anyone who continues to do that has to be suicidal.

I never never ever buy any produce from Mexico. Lettuce, tomatoes, peppers etc from USA or Canada only. Too risky to eat Mexican produce.

The last round came from AZ.

It’s incredibly easy to use this as a weapon. Albeit an indirect one.

Jorge Lopez sez that crop pickers should wipe their arses with the cilantro. I never liked cilantro. And I would rather not eat at restaurants where Jesse Jackson has intimated that workers should spit in white people’s food, like he did!

I wonder if Acosta is taking notes...

Oh, and it’s important to keep in mind that Trader Joe’s is actually owned by Aldi. perhaps they might have some issues as well.

That said... after a couple of bouts of “greens disease” at a few restaurants & salad bars, I just quit eating greens outside of my own garden and home. It’s not worth it. Especially at my age.

I’m not that old, mid sixties, but a man has to know his limitations, and I ain’t taking no chances unnecessarily.

They are actually separate companies. They were owned by German brothers, one has died.

“They are actually separate companies. They were owned by German brothers, one has died.”

According to Data Source the parent company is ALDI Nord. ALDI Nord acquired Trader Joe’s in 1979.

I love TJ’s for mostly everything but would never again buy any of their produce or fresh meats after being burned more than once with half-rotten food. Otherwise I love their wine, cookies, condiments, chips, frozen pizza and dinners — even love their colorful shopping totes! And I love the atmosphere in the store.
