Here’s a chance for the FBI to demonstrate that they are still capable of doing “some” good.

Yes! Born & raised there!

Name comes from a WWI munitions plant built there. Originally the area was called Lock 7 - for the 7th lock on the Kanawha River. I was told it didn’t incorporate and get the name Nitro until 1948. My late great uncle drew up the incorporation papers and was the town’s first city attorney.

For the time one of the munitions plant was on the largest government sponsored projects to support the war. A teenage Clark Gable worked there.

To me its a wonderful place!

Yeah, and the ‘sister’ chem plant to Bhopal, India is right around there also.
When we drive up to Ohio I hightail it by that area to US 35.

Kanawha River.

I have a question.
How do you pronounce 'Kanawha'.
I pronounce it Kan-A'-wha. Could be Kan-a-Wha'.

Just curious.

Was wonderful place you mean. They need to get rid of that city counsel but I guess that is everywhere. Don’t know if you’ve been following the news lately on Nitro but there has been trouble.

No one out side of West Virginia ever says Kanawha the correct way. I’d have to pronounce it to you better than I could type it here

This is best I can do “ kuh-NAW “

I’ve always pronounced it Ka- Naw- Ah!

I believe it’s an Algonquin word.

They running the place into the ground. Last year they tried to beautify the city by putting WWI statues all over the place which was okay I guess but still there is a drug problem and that does noting to attract business to the town.

The police department moved to a new location in a deal that some question.

Then there was this

Seems Nitro is always in the news for something and it’s not good.

How to pronounce “Kanawha”
A few minutes ago, Sitemeter tells me that somebody came to my site by Googling the keywords pronounce, kanawha. I don’t actually have that information here... perhaps we should remedy that.
Below is a photo of the Kanawha River which runs through Kanawha County in West Virginia.

You pronounce it kuh-NAH-wuh... roughly. Run it together real fast until it sounds like kuh-NAW. If you have another way of spelling the pronunciation, leave it in the comments. If you are not from around here, you’d probably try to say CAN-uh-WHA but that’s not correct. I’ve seen it spelled all kinds of ways on old maps... Canawa, etc. Naturally it’s an
Indian word, the meaning of which is uncertain.

Well I doubt little Nitro can do much to solve the opioid problem that’s so prevalent in similar locales. The inability to attract business has been a state wide problem for years. Nitro it much worse because it was such a one job (chemical industry) town for a long time. There is so little investment money in WV it’s hard to corral enough money to start anything new in manufacturing (Which is what the area desperately needs!). You go outside the state for money, they look at you like your crazy for bringing up the idea of investing in WV. The ill-educated, hillbilly, snaggle-tooth, “form-union-strike-at-the-drop-of-a-hat” image of WV is still out there and hard to overcome. Hopefully Trump can help out!
