Parenting in the current political climate isn't for the faint of heart. Recently, my 9-year old daughter asked me, "Mama, I know it's really bad they're putting people in jail, but do those people think, 'Well, at least I'm safe from war?' "
My 7-year old daughter quickly followed up with, "Why would someone say Donald Trump is keeping us safe?" Clearly, my two white kids, like all children in the United States, are absorbing the racialized rhetoric about immigration and "others" that's everywhere right now.
Numerous studies have shown the early and negative impact society's racism has on children's development. By the ages of 3 and 4, American children internalize racist stereotypes of self and others. By age 5, they recognize that different groups are treated differently and understand something about the racial social status. Children will never just "unlearn" these things on their own.
These studies were pre-2016. Public displays of racial hostility have since amplified, showing up in such topics as talk about kneeling NFL players, black families' attempts to enjoy a summer swim interrupted by white neighbors calling the police or immigration debates implying that people from south of the border are uniquely dangerous. We can only speculate how much worse the damage will be to children's long-term notions of self and others, and to what a just and peaceful society looks like.

I was raised to be racially sensitive. I really was. Both my parents were Liberal and active in Civil Rights in the 1960s. The whole “colorblind” thing and “content of their character” thing was a big deal in my house, and I really absorbed it very well.
Which is why I have no difficulty detecting the abhorrent anti-White hatred and racism which is redolent in crap pieces of “journalism” like this one.
Everyone is hypersensitive.
This stuff just needs to stop, all minority privileges need to stop, the chips on their shoulders need to stop.
Minorities being racist towards whites because of their racist assumptions about whites, needs to stop.
Oh, and Jenny, not sure you know it but folks of Spanish descent are European. Yeah, we know Spain is closer to Africa than other European countries.

My parents were from the Deep South, and being career Army, raised my siblings and me to be colorblind. It wasn’t until I entered the Navy in the early 70s during the Zumwalt/Black Power/Vietnam crap that I learned who are the real real racists in American society. Hint: It’s not whites.
Fake “journalists” like Jennifer Harvey make everything about themselves, whom they fancy as the enlightened ones. They are so full of themselves, and I am so sick of them.
I was raised by parents who taught us that we are all God’s children & we do unto others.....Simple but it works.
I never raised kids to be ‘sensitive’ to any race or ethnic group. Rather to understand there are clearly cultural differences that don’t just evaporate when they step into a room.
How can they not be f*cking “racially sensitive”? From the moment when they can understand and read, they are bombarded with the message: “you white? you racisss.”
What they mean is completely bent over in abject submission, beating one’s heart, saying “mea culpa,” and begging for forgiveness for being white.
