KIRKWOOD, N.Y. - New York State officials are warning of an alarming increase in reckless driving and crashes in highway work zones this year.
The Department of Transportation and State Police held a news conference Wednesday at the Interstate 81 Welcome Center in Kirkwood to spread the message that drivers need to be more careful and considerate when traveling through construction zones.
In particular, they want drivers to put down their phones and slow down.
The DOT brought a damaged attenuator for a visual example.
It was crushed earlier this year along Interstate 87 near Albany.
An attenuator is a safety device that is towed behind construction vehicles that absorbs the force of a collision, thereby protecting both the DOT workers and the driving public.
DOT officials say 20 of these attenuators have been crushed across the state so far this year.
And since the Prospect Mountain project in Binghamton began in 2012, a dozen attenuators have been struck.

This is why I do the speed limit in construction zones. People riding my ass in those zones can FO (and maybe D as well).
I also say hi to flaggers if I’m walking past a construction zone. They’re decent people; they don’t deserve abuse and things thrown at them.
Seeing people speed thru construction zones really ticks me off. Shoot, swing the cones tipped over at night does too. People are working there. Your stupidly of being late, texting, talking on the phone, or just being an A-hole; does not override the safety of workers.
When we hit Construction sites, we slow down to under the speed limit...Here the fines are doubled if you get a speeding ticket in a work Zone...
If NYS was serious about protecting workers, the state would suspend a driver’s license after the first work zone violation.
If ANY state were serious, they’d make it a felony.
I know tow truck drivers and the risks they face every day.
There’s a reason I support slow down/move over laws, but the penalties are too modest, as they are (still, even after a new round) also for phone use.
They should be criminal offenses, misdemeanors at a bare minimum.
I drove through one at 55 mph (the posted limit) on I-270 in Maryland yesterday, while some cop passed me in the passing lane doing what I guess was 80 to 100 mph. A COP!

They probably had a 2-for-1 sale at the donut shop!
