Montgomery County Sheriff Chris Watkins released this statement Friday, August 10.

On Thursday, August 9, 2018, a resident of a Lake Tillery development on the western side of Montgomery County went missing while taking her daily walk. After several hours the 66 year old female did not return home. Her husband called neighbors and friends who searched the area. They were unable to locate her and call 911.

Sheriff’s deputies and search and rescue were sent to the scene. Within hours she was discovered deceased on the side of an unused road within the development. An investigation was conducted with the assistance of the Medical Examiner’s Office, NC Wildlife Resources Commission and Animal Control.

The investigation revealed she had been attacked by dogs. Law enforcement searched the neighborhood and located two pit bull dogs with physical evidence reflecting the dog’s involvement. The animals were taken into custody by Animal Control and are being quarantined. The owner of the dogs is cooperating with officials and the matter is still under investigation and review by the District Attorney’s Office.

The name of the victim is being withheld until family members can be notified. The victim is being sent to the NC Medical Examiner’s Office in Raleigh for an autopsy. “This is a very tragic event, which has deeply affected the family, friends, deputies and first responders, our thoughts and prayers are being extended to all.”

I’m guessing it was not Golden Retrievers.

We had a pack of dogs roaming our area for a couple of years. There were five of them. They were a nuisance and actually killed a couple of our chickens. We’re in a very rural area.

We saw them a couple of times when we were on walks but they took off when they saw us. Same as when we caught them by our chickens.

The funny part: They appear to be Beagles.

The Dogs of Peace strike again.

Just one of the many reasons I carry wherever I go.

All I had to do was search for “killed” in the title. “dogs” would work too.

The breed doesn’t matter. They are all dogs. It’s culture, not biology!

Whenever I see someone (even a friend), with a Pitbull, it’s like seeing them shooting up heroine. My respect for them goes down a notch or three.

Dogs will pack around a lead dog. Had a problem with that in the late 1970s in my community. A stray German Shepherd came up in the community and local dogs packed around him. He tore up my good bird dog a couple of times. One morning I looked down across the field and there must have been 30 dogs packed around him in a pasture.

Got my gun and took off in the car. when I got out of the car with my gun, dogs started scattering everywhere. Clearly, they all had been threatened with a gun before. I eliminated that gentleman that morning and the dogs quit packing. It was a clear threat to children of the rural community. Even good pet dogs will pack around a leader like that. I saw it repeatedly with my own eyes.

I do not go anywhere there is a pit bull present. Would never go to the house of a pit bull owner.

I’m not all that afraid of the breed, partly because I’m very wary of them when around one. Nobody who’s house I go to has a pit bull.

Respectfully disagree.....

I professionally train search, rescue and protection dogs. mostly GSD’s or Malinois.....

Pit Bull’s are unique because of their breeding. Certain traits that lend to attack are inherent in the breed.

I saw a moron mom letting her 6 year old walk a pit bull. Some would argue it’s no different then a 6 year old carrying a loaded gun. Except in this case, a gun doesn’t have a mind of its’s own. Pit bull does.

Dogs pack in rural areas because people dump them in the ‘country’ when they want rid of them instead of taking them to a shelter. They pack together to survive and become feral like. They are more dangerous than coyotes because they don’t have much fear of people. Most of them were pets at one time. A pack nearly killed a 14-year old boy on a bicycle close to us one day. The only thing that saved him was a farmer with a rifle hanging in his truck. If I ride my bike on my country roads my .38 is strapped to the handlebars.
