'Ontario 21' pit bull saved from fighting will get training for K-9 work in Philly area with the Throw Away Dogs Project. By Sam Newhouse

Dallas, a pit bull rescued from an Ontario dog-fighting ring, was facing euthanasia but now is entering training as a K-9.

A pit bull who has led a precarious life for years – discovered in a massive Canadian dogfighting ring, scheduled for execution by animal welfare authorities and then freed by court order – is now on the way to a very unexpected second act: K-9 police dog training in the Philly area through the Throw Away Dogs Project.

"These dogs were ordered to be killed simply because of what they were labeled as," the Throw Away Dogs Project wrote in an announcement of pit bull Dallas being accepted into the program. "He will enter our program and start his journey in becoming a police dog."

Dallas, who arrived on Saturday in the South Jersey area for training, is one of 31 dogs rescued in 2015 from a huge dog-fighting ring in Ontario, Canada, where pit bulls are outlawed. The dogfighting ring that was operating in Chatham, Ontario led to five people being charged criminally. Three of the pit bulls were euthanized for medical reasons, and seven were deemed suitable for rehabilitation. The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) had to seek a court order to euthanize the remaining 21 dogs. #Ontario21 advocates for victims of dogfighting

The OSPCA said at the time that expert dog rehabilitators determined the dogs "were the most game dogs they have ever seen. They are not pets, their focus is to kill."

But a legal challenge to the euthanasia got widespread support under the #Ontario hashtag, and two years later . . ."

Why Pit Bull Type Dogs Fail as Police Dogs

https://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3676319/posts

All of the articles I have posted on these dogs have the keyword “pitbull”.

This helps one to find much information on FR regarding the breed-type and the problems, to include charts, statistics, and links.

Hi Norski.
YOU are posting a semi-postive Pit Bull article?
Well, I declare! I did a double take when I saw your pen-name.
I guess it shows wisdom and diplomacy to examine both sides of any phenomenon.
Toodle-loo!

If this dog kills someone then everyone involved in using it as a K-9 Should be up on murder charges.

What a warped thing to say. It is disgustingly funny. It is very much too bad that I do not allow myself to laugh because the subject is so terrible, but inside I am laughing much.

Thank you. I think.

This article is a warning.

The dog was a fighting dog, a very “game” one. “Gameness” is the quality of willingness to fight and to kill, even unto death.

In no way do I consider this event positive.

I apologise for my lack of clarity.

Wow, a pit who was “rescued” from actual dog fighting and is now being trained as a K-9.

What could go wrong???

I’ve spent many years training hunting dogs, and I own a pit bull. I’ve also come in contact with many other pits. Pit bulls don’t have the nose for tracking. I can only imagine that other breeds would be much better at tracking drug and bomb detection.

Pit bulls would excel as guard dogs. They have excellent hearing and eyesight, and are very smart and cautious. Mine won’t take food from strangers, and I did not teach him this. Also, because of their cunningness and caution, they tend not to bark at what they perceive as a possible threat or infringement on their territory. They prefer to hide and watch. But, when they think their territory has officially been breached, they are in all out attack mode. But, it has been my experience that they are easily barrier and territory trained.

But, I think pit bulls would suck at police work.

The pit bull “k-9” could attack the victim, the handler, the legitimate k9 dogs, the police vehicle, random pets and livestock in its area, . . .could kill any of the above before it was shot, including any alleged perpetrators . . .

The article indicates that this is fighting dog, and a very “game” one. They have been bred and trained to attack without warning. No good will come of this.

This (placing a fighting dog as a police k-9) is a formula for injuries, possible deaths, and major lawsuits, which in municipalities that self-insure, could cause bankruptcy of said municipality.

It also appears that I have not made the issue clear.

Yes. This is why I posted this article. The actions of these Pit Bull Advocates (pit pushers) should be made known. If it is of interest, the article should be reposted elsewhere so that it is remembered. Also, it would be helpful to know which town or city’s law enforcement receives the dog, or others similar.

Why Pit Bull Type Dogs Fail as Police Dogs

You always hear the argument that "..pitbulls are used in hunting all the time, hence they have good noses.."

They DO NOT have good noses. Pitbulls do work well with other dogs, and they are used for hunting hogs when there are good scent dogs (Walkers, redbones, etc.) running with them. A good pair of hog-hunting pitbulls will run at the back of the pack and follow the "nose" dogs until they see the hog. Then, the nose dogs will back off and let those pits do what they do best. I've seen two pits head-and-heel hogs that weighed in at 400 lbs or better.

I have no doubt that the pits destroyed 400lb. feral hogs. They were bred for “Bull-baiting” (killing bulls for entertainment) before having terrier stock added for pit-fighting use. They kill much livestock every year.

I have been told that “pit bulls are used in hunting all the time”. The Dogo Argentinos who mauled one of their owners in San Fransisco ( a large scale breeding operation in a residential neighborhood) last month are also listed as “hunting dogs”.

I believe that I have mentioned on another thread that the hunting of feral hogs is the only legitimate legal use for pit bulls that I have found, and that they are, as you say, very good at it.

I have also been told anecdotally that some hounds are about the only breed-type that can take a pit bull down.

But hounds do not have the genetic deficiencies that the pit bull breeders have selected for. And that genetic “deficiency” is an item that has been bred OUT. It has been removed. It cannot be bred back IN.

Hence the breed problem.
