My guess is he had a family member or friend who was an Apple employee, the employee was a little careless, and the kid was able to steal his keys.
-THAT- was the hack. It had nothing to do with "hacking Apple". He hacked the person he stole the keys from.
How many others? Depends on how many people have that circumstance. I hope when they find out who the kid stole the keys from, they fire his/her ass on the spot. They'll never work in high-tech again.
