Movie Review -- Crazy Rich Asians
Fandango ^ | 8-18-18 | vanity

This is my personal assessment of this movie. Run, don't walk, to see this hilarious romantic comedy in your nearest theatre. I haven't laughed so hard in a movie theatre in years. My husband enjoyed it as much as I did.

I need to see it again, since many of the jokes are culturally based, but there was enough there to keep just about anybody entertained. It received a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many of the reviewers seemed to have Asian names, so it doesn't look like they were offended at the humor. The audience where I viewed it was cheering at the end.

It's about a Chinese American professor and her Singaporean boyfriend who turns out to be the most eligible bachelor in Asia and her struggle to be deemed worthy by his mother and grandmother.

I would describe this movie as a light-hearted cross between Mafia Wives and Blazing Saddles from a Chinese angle. The humor is mostly clean with only an occasional few ribald moments. There is even a Donald Trump joke in there that I assure you will not offend any Trump supporter (a difficult accomplishment for Hollywood these days).

This movie was so funny that I would like to see a sequel. What happens after they marry? Where do they live? How did Astrid's life turn out? I want more, more, more about this family. When was the last time a movie made me want more? I can't remember...that's when.

I’ll look into it. Hard to find good movies these days. I recommend “Eat Drink Man Woman” if you haven’t seen it.

Eat Drink Man Women is a good movie but people should be warned it’s premised on a homosexual relationship.

It opened in Wisconsin August 15. I only found it because I had a couple of free passes to the local theatre and was checking the movie listings for Friday night. I started reading the reviews and watching the trailers and found this gem. Boy, was it worth my evening! Laughed and laughed. I have seen no other discussion of it, except at Rotten Tomatoes, or Fandango. I think this is Academy Award material, except they seldom recognize comedies.

Are you sure you have the right movie? I don’t recall anything about homosexuality in that film. Not one thing.

I watched the trailer. It looked like a real chick flick.

It doesn’t matter how good a movie is these days I won’t be going but thanks for the review. I may catch it one day in the future when it costs nothing but until then I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Not really. In real life there's many a slip twixt the cup and the lip! She accepted the ring, and that's where they left it. There are still a lot of devious forces (women) working against this couple. LOL

I looked her up. Constance Wu plays the star — Rachel Chu. You are absolutely right in your assessment.

EDMW premised? Not that I can see, watching it a week or two ago.

The Wedding Banquet is overt, not premised.

And a daughter character is a lesbian in Dim Sum Funeral.

FWIW, both EDMW and Banquet are in the rotation this month on the MGM channel.

I attended a party where they bought the theatre and invited all their friends; we had a blast! The movie is entertainment at its near-best. I mean its not perfect, but is funny and a good investment of your time and ticket price.

It’s a story about a relationship, so you know the basic plot. BGG_BLG_BGGB

See it and laugh. I’m old and I really enjoyed the movie.

I went to school with the author. Should be interesting. He graduated early... at 16. Prodigy.

Great movie? No. But, it was very entertaining.... And that’s why I go to see a movie,

The plot, outside of the fact this its Asians, is VERY familiar. The acting was spotty... Often very good. Often weak,

Visually beautiful film.... Pretty funny. Interesting characters.

Much better than most of the trash coming out of H-wood these days.
