...snip... When I grew up, all my male classmates were out shooting guns when they were seven. My father, of an urban liberal persuasion, wouldn’t let me near a firearm until I was 17. Still, I strongly believe that one of the most important skills a parent can teach their children is self defense. Dogs do it. Cats do it, tigers do it. Only domesticated animals like cows, sheep, chickens, turkeys, and domesticated pigs don’t. (I guess that is why we farm them for food. They don’t fight back.)
Yes. Humans tend NOT to EAT animals that fight back. I wonder why…
If I still lived in the United States, I would make the arrangements to teach my children how to shoot. As it stands, here in China they have to wait until they are in their early teens before they obtain weapon training (everyone in China MUST complete basic military training as part of middle school). The good news is that they will get a very comprehensive training in both small arms, and fully automatic weapons.
Proactively teaching your kids how to safely use firearms is the best way to teach a healthy respect for them. Don’t allow them to learn by Hollywood movies. These are very unhealthy mediums for learning about firearms. (As anyone can attest to the “sideways” pistol shooting style popularized by the negro urban youth, and the “thug” culture. It is not a way to accurately shoot a pistol.)
When they’re 7 or so, introduce them to a pellet gun and begin teaching proper gun safety rules like keeping their finger off the trigger until they’re ready to shoot and treating every weapon as if it were loaded. Set up a a target (tin cans are fun) in your backyard and let them plink

Now that the schools have broken the Labor Day threshold on getting your kids back, they will continue to move the start of the school year up 1 week every year until they have them year round. Which sadly, is what most parents want. It’s much easier that way. Childhood summers are gone, a thing of the past, replaced by perpetual school related “camps”.
Yes, of course big government types want year-around school. But right now the advantage of being in the teaching racket is you get lots of time off in the summer (not as much as the children due to teacher in-service training but still 5-7 weeks in most systems). What other job offers at least two weeks off at Christmas and a bunch of weeks in the summer and still has a good year-around benefits package? The teachers will cry foul if summers get shorter.

It’s already happened. My son finished school on June 16, and started back again on August 15. Less than two months! Not a real summer at all.
Here in Alabama the schools started even earlier: August 7th but they got out May 25th. Still, it is very costly to run those air-conditioning systems full blast in August.
Michigan does not start until after Labor Day, although some schools get waivers.
Our tourist season is the reason.
Homeschool. 365 days a year and every day a holiday.
In other words, stuff we do everyday at our Trail Life USA troop.
A few weeks ago, we had a week of what we called Man Camp with about 100 young men.
We went through 7000 rounds of .22, 1500 12 gauge shells and clays, shot countless arrows, threw tomahawks, climbed rockwalls, explored a wild cave etc. The boys built rafts and had an epic sea battle in the lake complete with over 1000 water balloon “cannonballs”
They all came home in one piece and are already making plans for next year.
