Tofurky sues to stop Missouri law over meat terminology

Vegetarian food-maker Tofurky filed a lawsuit in Missouri on Monday seeking to defend its right to describe its products with meat terminology such as "sausage" and "hot dogs," as long as the packaging makes clear what the ingredients are.

The Hood River, Oregon-based company and The Good Food Institute, which advocates for plant-based diets, say a Missouri law set to take effect Tuesday that bars companies from "misrepresenting" products as meat if they're not from "harvested livestock or poultry" is too vague and could be used to go after a range of vegetarian products that use such terminology. Tofurky says if the law is allowed to stand, it would have to change its packaging.

The Missouri Cattlemen's Association, which supported the statute, said its concern isn't with products like Tofurky that make clear they're from plants. Mike Deering, the group's executive vice president, said the worry is the emerging science of meat grown by culturing animal cells in a lab, and whether they'll disclose how they were made once they're on the market.

I have a low opinion of vegans but ,"as long as the packaging makes clear what the ingredients are", I really have no problem with what the company wants to do.

Tofurky turns men into Soy Boys.

If vegetables are so good for you, why do libs insist on monster fauxmeat frankenfoods? Shouldn't a healthy vegetable lifestyle mean going from farm to table directly? Why does this wonderful delicious natural food need to go through industrial processes and chemical treatment?

Maybe it has more to do with virtue signaling that nutrition? "Hey everybody, look at me! I eat fake meat from a factory!"

If a given individual wants to be vegetarian or even vegan that’s fine by me, it’s a free country. However, faking meat products does seem a little strange. Why, if they’re philosophically opposed to killing and eating animals do they want their facsimiles to resemble killing and eating animals? Marketers of such products need to come up with their own names that do not mislead non-vegetarians into eating soy-based artificial foods that quite honestly have their own problems themselves.

We have been warned for years NOT to eat highly processed foods.

Now we are told to eat highly processed soy beans and other fake meats.

Why would a true Vegan eat anything that tasted like meat?

What would Hitler (The world’s most famous Vegan) eat?

I grew up in Wisconsin. When margarine first came out, it was ILLEGAL to sell it in Wisconsin.

I remember when McDonald’s was forced to change “milk shakes” to “shakes” because they contained no milk. McDonald’s fought it.

God knows what’s in their shakes, most likely some type of soy by-product.

Why Jack-in-the-Box advertises MILK shakes.

Have they tried yet to attack the “egg cream”? It contains neither egg nor cream. Go figure...
