True. I hoped that one wouldn’t be a viable possibility. Though the changes you suggest would also be sufficiently heretical that one of the Cardinals (+Burke?) would declare the See vacant. Again, schism, possibly with multiple claimants to the Papacy; also with the good guys not having the high ground.

If it goes that way, call Salvini and remind him why Mussolini built that big, beautiful boulevard leading up to the front of Piazza San Pietro.

The Pope is tired (you can see it in his eyes). One tires much faster when staring down the barrel of a tank gun. I doubt he has eight years even without the present turmoil.

I too hope it’s not a viable possibility, but the pessimist in me says it’s more likely than your 1 through 3. As for the idea that Burke or someone like him will stand up and oppose heresy, I’m afraid that they won’t. They’ll do what they’ve been doing—write articles, rant on EWTN, hold conferences... and none of it will amount to anything as Team Bergoglio brazenly uses its wrecking ball on the Church. As to your doubts about his longevity, I disagree. As Bergoglio reportedly said to McCarrick, the bad ones never die. Look at Ruth B.G.
