The evidence is there that Europe experienced stark cold and dry spells, putting a strain on Neanderthals' food supply and ability to survive. Thanks to a group of researchers looking at stalagmites in Romania, we may have proof this was indeed the case.
Dr. Ersek and his team looked at the stalagmitesrocks that gather in caves for long stretches of time to look at the climate. Stalagmites contain rings, similar to trees, which can give an indication of how extreme weather patterns, occurring over thousands of years, impacted Neanderthals.
The study was published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the Natural Academy of Sciences. Neanderthals existed on Eurasia for approximately 350,000 years. But during the time of the last Ice Age and the arrival of modern humans in Europe, they became extinct.
During cold periods of time, the team found a "near complete absence" of archaeological artifacts from the group, suggesting cooler temperatures meant fewer tools. Though Neanderthals had learned to control and manipulate fire, just like modern humans, Neanderthals did not incorporate fish and plants into their diet, giving them fewer food sources.
But our findings indicate that the Neanderthal populations successively decreased during the repeated cold stadials."
A stadial is a period of colder climate; conversely, an interstadial is a period of warmer climate.

Those darned SUVs!
Maybe the coming climate change will result in idiots being extinct? That would be a real positive.
Way back then, people were saying, “Drive an electric car!”
And the Neanderthals were all like, “I’m driving an SUV! I need the leg room!”
And see where it got them??
It was those darned cigarettes that killed ‘em off.
So COLD killed the Neanderthals because food supplies ran out.
Remind me again why we want to stop global warming.
How else were they supposed to transport their families and large pets?
Shame. The DNC could have used them.
Serves them right for driving those CO2 spewing SUVs.
It has been pretty well established that drastic changes in climate do affect the survival of species.
If one overlooks the scare tactic used in the headline, the essence of this study is that the ice age killed off the Neanderthals. Hmm. The current hysteria about “climate change” is about the earth warming up an insignificant amount—not about the drastic changes that *do* kill off species that evolved to survive in very different climates. Many species did not survive the transition to an ice age. Species that did survive evolved to thrive in the cold, and then died off when the earth exited the ice age. And this all has nothing to do with human activity.
The Earth’s climate is always changing. There were glaciers covering the USA down to New York. Not there now. The natural force that did away with the glaciers is still in effect now.
Climate change fanatics believe that the natural force is gone, and that man’s activities are heating up the planet.
Hey idiots! every night the Earth radiates heat into space. If it heats up too much on one day, it radiates MORE. Natural feedback. Works. Designed to keep the planet from roasting.
Not all the undercooked Brontosaurus Burgers?
Should have switched to solar power, thissll teach em.
What are they talking about? Neanderthals are still around. Maybe they should have done a little research. . . .
Russians meddled with the stone age climate by sending fossil fuel burning industries back 300k years. We need a special investigator to look into how Trump colluded

Those canards were nothing but BS from the start, pulled up out of thin air, and have been superseded (refuted) by actual evidence. It had been years since I'd seen anyone make those claims. The fact that the guy writing this has Neandertal DNA, and that most (if not all) people reading this have Neandertal DNA, really cornholes what they're saying anyway. Thanks BenLurkin. Good one for the weekly digest ping.
KEYWORDS: neandertal; neandertals; neanderthal; neanderthals
Was it climate change? Or was it that they kept praying and sacrificing their economy to their gods in penance for causing the gods to change the climate?
Maybe it was not the climate change, but the lack of mental ability to cope with it in a practical way. You know, what Bjorn Lomborg has been advocating for about 20 years now.
