"Billings is the” big city” in Montana. I visited cousins there a long time ago. It is a nice town. If you cannot find a hotel room there try the next closest town, about 200 miles away." Sheridan, WY is about 130 miles and might be an option. Also the weather up there this time of year is usually pretty good so camping might be an option if there isn't freakish weather - which is common.

One of the Best Months of my life was last fall hunting and just driving and exploring Montana. From Kalispell to Miles to Lima to West Yellowstone... Only hit the Cities when I needed to just “passing thru”.
