will pass by Earth at about half the distance between us and the moon this weekend.

There's no need to worry, though. While the newly discovered near-Earth Asteroid 2018 RC will make a relatively close pass by our planet, it will still safely clear the neighborhood with no chance of a collision.

The University of Hawaii's Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) first spotted the asteroid on Monday, and it's estimated to measure up to 233 feet (71 meters) in diameter. That's the same height as the 17-story Kajima Building (also known as the California Bank and Trust Building) in Los Angeles.

The fact that 2018 RC is so large made it easier to discover almost a full week before its closest approach. Asteroid 2018 RC will reach its nearest point to us of about 136,702 miles (220,000 kilometers) in the early morning hours Saturday at 5:06 a.m. PT, to be exact.

It is why we need a Space Command

We might have to pulverize an asteroid before it hits the United States (or some other part of the world)...

Or capture it, park it at an L5 point and MAKE a Space Command office out of it.

No, you don’t want to pulverize them because that can turn one big one into what amounts to cosmic buckshot. Its better to just steer them off course away from us either by using a small nuke(but launch one is risky) or using a high powered laser to cause it to be redirected.

Yeah, yeah, lets do that! Space Command! And we can have hot babes in silver mini skirts with purple hair ‘n’ stuff and bad guys you never see but who fly around in little UFO’s that spin around and blow up with one shot.

From watchers.news: "A newly discovered asteroid designated 2018 RS flew past Earth at a very close distance of 0.28 LD / 0.00071 AU (106 214 km / 65 998 miles) on September 5, 2018, one day before it was discovered."

Simplified version: "A newly discovered asteroid designated 2018 RS flew past Earth at a very close distance on September 5, 2018, one day before it was discovered."

Some day it's going to say, "It hit the Earth 1 second before it was discovered."

... or steer it into a collision with another planet or the far side of the moon. Never store a threat.

If that thing were to impact us at about 30,000 to 40,000 miles an hour it would be one seriously bad day down here.

"Sounds like kind of a dinky sized asteroid to me."

It's a little larger than the estimated size of the meteor that hit in Tunguska in 1908. That one flattened an estimated 80 million trees in an 830 sq. mile area. Some have estimated that the Tunguska explosion (it exploded before striking the earth) released the equivalent energy of 1,000 Hiroshima bombs. It would be a very bad day if a similarly sized rock hit a populated area.

Well, it is one thing for an asteroid that large to hit earth. It is another for an asteroid to start out that large before it breaks up in the atmosphere. I am not sure how big the remnants would be after it broke up and partially burned up coming down but it would no longer be anywhere close to building sized after falling through our atmosphere, would it?

Eric Mack obviously is racially prejudiced against Japanese People! He must be a radical Obama supporting lefty, they detest Asians.

Mack secretly wants Little Tokyo destroyed!

Tell Cory Booker Right away and he will stand on top of the Kajima building , protecting it with his own eyes bugging out!Definitely presidential material?

Blistering Blue Barnacles, its so easy to mimic the whacko lefts insane mewling.
