It would depend on the composition of the asteroid, whether it is rock, or iron; but I think you would still have a very large object coming in. The Tunguska rock blew up 3 to 6 miles above the surface, but still did a lot of damage.

We might have to pulverize an asteroid before it hits the United States (or some other part of the world)...

With enough advance warning a small robotic spacecraft could intercept it at a distance and give it a nudge away from our orbit. The problem is that many of the NEOs are not seen until they are too close for an adequate response.

Actually if one that size, say an iron class rock, roughly the size of 17 story building traveling about 25 miles per second or so impacted anywhere near a major population center, it would be a cataclysmic, historic and very deadly for a lot of people.

Well, tat was my point. People were assuming no breaking up or burning up at all. As if it would strike the gound as an intact mass.

It’s still going to be a big honkin’ rock when it hits. And the Tunguska meteor broke up real good.
