Student stabbed with metal hair pick on first day of school

A student at Automotive High School in Brooklyn was stabbed by another student with a metal hair comb pick on the first day of classes. Malik Santigao, 17, was stabbed multiple times and suffered injuries to his hand, back, neck and head. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. Trevell Brown, 17, was removed from the school by safety agents and was taken into custody at the 94th Precinct.

I remember when angel food cutters became the "hair pick" and weapon of choice in schools, back in the 1970's. Until school administrators got wise and banned them. They made more sense if you had an afro.

Truth: I was bused to an integrated middle school that formerly had been a black high school. Because I had skipped a grade and not yet hit my growth spurt, I was small. At the school were 15, 16, and 17 year old black 8th graders, with facial hair and criminal records. Mostly an OK experience, except gym class, and flag football games in particular, which were definitely “Mind if we dance with yo’ dates?” occasions.

Was he stabbed by a male or a female, I wonder?
And, if a male assailant, did he borrow the hair pick from a female friend?

“Trevell” sounds more male than female to me, but it’s hard to tell for sure. Would “Trevelle” have cleared up the doubt, or just been a different spelling?
