Couple encounters mountain lion at Mad Creek ( Colorado )

A Steamboat Springs couple recently had a scary encounter with a mountain lion at Mad Creek.

Mark Stanford and his wife, Kristen Joaquim, were having a picnic Monday for Joaquim's birthday at the Mad Creek barn, and they started hiking back to the parking area at about 7:45 p.m.

"I looked up and saw a set of eyes staring back at me," Stanford said.

He said he saw a yellow-green reflection off the eyes, and he tried to size up the animal.

"I could see that it was a big cat," Stanford said. "I knew that they had sighting ups there."

He was carrying a firearm, and he shot off a round to try and scare the animal. It ran off and the couple started hiking again before discovering the animal again on the trail.

They felt like they were being hunted.

"It was just a pretty scary encounter," Stanford said.

Stanford was grateful his wife did something to alert him to the presence of the mountain lion.

"If she hadn't done that, and I didn't have my gun on me, there is a good chance one of us wouldn't be here," Stanford said.

I’m not impressed.
He should have shot the cougar.
(Laz would have hit it.)

Diana Bober would be wishing she carried a sidearm instead of pepper spray if she hadn’t been eaten by a mountain lion a few days ago.

What did they expect while wandering around in a mountain lion’s kitchen?

"...warning shot to scare the animal..."

Great. You most likely won’t see the muscular cat when he pounces next time. Warning shots are dumb.

Not dumb if he only had a pistol. The cat would have to be pretty close to hit it with a pistol.

“Diana Bober would be wishing she carried a sidearm instead of pepper spray if she hadn’t been eaten by a mountain lion a few days ago.”

But she was s strong, independent woman who felt safe on the trails. What could go wrong?

Mark Sanford? Hiking? With his “wife”? Is she Argentinian?

Oh, STanford. Nevermind.

One less member of The Resistance against President Trump isn't a bad thing.

She seemed to make "poor choices" in life...

Those cats are like ghosts. You may not see them for quite some time but never assume they aren’t around. Haven’t seen one in quite a while, but I see tracks now and then.

The big cat was stalking them.
He should have tried to focus his front sight on the cat’s shoulder while firing the warning shot.

What’s the ideal round for protection from Mt. Lions?

It couldn’t hurt. You say warning shots are useless. Well, a missed shot is the same as a warning shot....especially if he had no or little chance of hitting the cat.

Besides, in the heat of the moment I doubt if he thought “I won’t take a warning shot because it’s useless and I’ll hope for the best”.

“But she was s strong, independent woman who felt safe on the trails. What could go wrong?”

And she loved nature... and was very intuitive.

“Diana Bober moved to Gresham in 2015, and was self-employed as an intuitive counselor, a career that gave her a flexible schedule and allowed her time for hiking, her sister said. Their father worked for the government and both she and her sister were born overseas. The family moved around frequently, eventually ending up in Texas, where the girls went to high school and college.

After college, Diana Bober moved to Dallas and then New York City, hoping to break into acting. From New York, she went to Los Angeles, looking to get into film. She later moved to Las Vegas, where she played Texas Hold ‘Em professionally.

She grew disenchanted with Las Vegas and after looking at various places to live, Diana came to Portland with her mother, and fell in love with the place.

Alison Bober said the family isn’t planning a memorial for her sister because her friends are farflung. If anyone wants to hold a tribute to her, they can “just find one of the open trails and just think about the natural world,” Alison said.

“She would say you have to live your life without fear,” she said, “Nothing in life is truly safe. That’s what she would want, just for people to enjoy the important things in life such as a day of beauty.”

I don’t want to nit pick but one does not focus the front sight when aiming at something. One aligns the front and back sites.

Yes, front sights are for really close range.
