Nasty piece of CSS code crashes and restarts iPhones
ZDNet ^ | September 15, 2018 | By Catalin Cimpanu

A security researcher has discovered a vulnerability in the WebKit rendering engine used by Safari that crashes and restarts the iOS operating system used by iPhones and iPads.

The vulnerability can be exploited by loading an HTML page that uses specially crafted CSS code. The CSS code isn't very complex and tries to apply a CSS effect known as backdrop-filter to a series of nested page segments (DIVs).

Backdrop-filter is a relative new CSS property and works by blurring or color shifting to the area behind an element. This is a heavy processing task, and some software engineers and web developers have speculated that the rendering of this effect takes a toll on iOS' graphics processing library, eventually leading to a crash of the mobile OS altogether.

Zero Day vulnerability for both iOS devices and macOS browsers that use WebKit. At this point it will only cause a restart on your iOS device and a freeze on your macOS Safari or other WebKit Browser which will re-freeze on restarting the App due to the same webpage being retained and re-opened to get out of that, force quit and hold down the Shift Key on re-entering the App).—PING!

Thanks to The Battman for the heads up.

Unfortunately, the finder of this problem not only notified Apple of the issue he discovered, but ALSO decided to publish his code that will create the problem on Twitter. . . not a good move.

Apples have worms

The same dodo Tweeted a ZeroDay on September 9th that crashes ChromeOS and Chrome browsers, and many people who tested it on other mobile Browsers, including Android, found it crashed and/or froze, them, even Brave. Only Safari successfully closed the tab that was frozen, but even that took some time to take.

His excuse for Tweeting it? Google wouldn't pay a bounty for it.

This one really is broken.
It shows the apple and then goes dark and shows the apple and goes dark, over and over and over.
Won’t do anything else.

As a software developer, I see nothing wrong with this ;-)

Maybe. Do a full reinstall of the iOS. See if that solves the problem. If not, make an appointment with the closest Apple Store's Genius Bar and have them do a diagnostic on it. Sometimes they can fix it. . . or if it's a known problem, exchange it for a replacement.

Demonstrate the problem, yes. Broadcast the offending code? I have a bit of a problem with that.

Call 1-800-my-APPLE and tell them what's going on. That really is broken. May be something that will get you a replacement.

Does it do this even when plugged in? Sounds like a dead battery to me.

I have been very pleased with the Brave browser for iPhone.

It’s much faster and has much more robust privacy features.

It was developed by the guy who developed Firfox browser, but who was then forced out of his own company by the Gaystopo.

I believe Google and a number of other companies are suing Brave because it totally short circuits their spying efforts.

This happened to my Samsung 7 one time when the battery drained.

Had to remove SIM card and the charge back up before reinstalling card.

Sure, buy him a nice replacement ... flip-phone.

Tell him he can have a new iphone when he pays for it with his own hard-earned money. Then, maybe he will take better care of it.

But then again, I’m a meanie. :P
