Non conventional theories:Are they a psychological experiment?
know.your.why ^ | know.your.why

My father has been a pilot for all of my life of 50 years. He seems to latch on to ideas such as the flat earth theory that betrays everything that he was trained in aerial course plotting. True north? Magnetic North? Distant mountains rising from the horizon during the flight etc. He finally believes that the international space station exists after I insisted that he join me on a clear night to watch it go over. He seems to be obsessed with the notion that doom and destruction are always nearing. He's been like chicken little about gun control for 20+ years. Today more people have guns than ever. My point is that he is far from alone. It seems that 1000's of people are aggravating over 'covert/secret' motives of a nameless 'Them or They' that are trying to totally control 'everyone else'.

Is there a possibility that these crazy flat-earth ideas get started on the internet as an experiment to see how many 1000's of people buy into it which would give them a statistic on what they could actually make these gullible lost people believe?

Sorry if this is not the right place to throw up my concern about the weird stuff that seems to be taking hold in this country. I find it very disturbing..

Hillary’s candidacy is better evidence of the answer you seek. “They” care only about power.
Ever watch Dateline? When they ask the audience to chime in online with what they think, they don’t care what you think. They just count hits.

Maybe they are right? There is some evidence lately..................

He is getting older and he’s scared.

He doesn’t even realize that.

Flat earthers are gullible enough to believe the deep state doesn’t exist.

Also...television in general is very seductive and destructive to the moral compass of especially young minds. I was at a place recently that had TV. I was nauseated to see a commercial that pitched a prescription drug that when taken prevents someone from contracting HIV!

I couldnt hardly believe it. The actors portrayed obviously gay people. AND then the following commercial was a Vodka commercial with Ted Danson with an obviously gay man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWdD7rvbOLc

I hate to suggest that your dad might be a danger to his passengers and other innocent people on the ground, but do you think that might be the case? Personally, I don't know if I would want to fly with someone like that.

In my experience, flat-earthers can deny what their eyes are telling them, and what their brains ought to be telling them, all to hold onto that whacky belief of theirs.

In their obstinacy, they could conceivably fly their plane into the ground rather than admit what they are seeing is the curvature of the earth up ahead.

On a serious note, the issue you are raising is truth. What is truth? We have multiple generations that have been told truth is relative.

How do you test the truth? A touch stone https://www.thefreedictionary.com/touchstone was used in the past. Right now people test the truth with their own thinking which changes from day to day. The have no touchstone to test the truth.

Science used to be directed at discovering truth, and more than that, the golden target was the universal truth that explained everything. Now science does not want to look at systems and see how their small area fits in with other systems.

Philosophy has been divorced from science.

For those of a philosophy bent here is something worthy of thought:

Joh_18:37 Pilate said, “So You are a king?” Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”

I didn’t mention that my Dad is a theological scholar...Bob Jones University, SC in the latter 1950’s.

....same place (and period) where Fred Phelps went to seminary (but never graduated).

The place was co-ed....but people would get in trouble for romantically holding hands. Dad told me how guys and gals would ‘pet’ between the rows of shelves in the library.

Weird culture...

I think we’re 1 or 2 generations away from virtualizing ourselves into oblivion. People will be able to create their own virtual world that will be indistinguishable from the real thing. It will make opioid addiction looks like child’s play in comparison.

Why would anyone go to the trouble of working hard to get ahead, or putting in years of study to become a doctor or scientist? Besides, AI robots will be doing all the work anyway.

mind boggling. sad. depressing. scary.

Mostly sad. I have a hard time reconciling with myself as to how to react. Do I testify as to how easy it is to prove that we live on a spherical mass that is 8K miles in diameter? Call anyone in China and ask them if its light or dark and it will be the opposite in the US.

Or just ignore them and shake my head. Pray for em...that can only help...me.

AI robots couldn’t do my job for what they’re paying me.

I wonder what an AI robot strike would look like.

Glad that I wont be around to find out.

It’s even worse in Kansas. They believe in the flat state theory.

He could be a danger to himself, kyw. OTOH, he has been doing it successfully for 50 years, so obviously when it's important, he must be able to ignore what his eyes are telling him and do his job well.

Would I try to talk him out of flying in the future? Yes.

Would I take my concerns to the authorities and thus betray him (and, you know, he would know you did it)? That's the hard thing!

You're in my prayers, kyw. HE'S in my prayers. It's encouraging he has navigated the profession and his beliefs so well for such a long time, now! Cheers!
