There seems to be a concerted effort to portray scientists as a bunch of bumbling fools who just can’t seem to get their theories straight.

That's been the history of science from day 1. It's only with "GoreBull Warming" where's there no doubt about it, case closed.

I'm smart enough to realize that ‘science’ in its various incarnations gave me the electronic device I'm typing this on, and the miraculous infrastructure that connects it to the outside world. I'm also smart enough not to let a pop-sci story on slight discrepancies in planetary accretion calculations make me throw the baby out with the bathwater. Politics corrupted science, always has, not the other way around.
