If you think your dog is smart you're barking up the wrong tree, according to a new study.
Scientists have found the intelligence of mans best friend is matched by several species including cats and donkeys.
They identified several cases of 'over interpretation' with owners often thinking their dog was much smarter than it really was.

Love cats.
But there is no way they are as smart as dogs.
I have had smart dogs and dumb dogs.
Mixed breed mutts are the smartest.
Purebreds seem to be lacking in brain power................
“He is as dumb as they come.”
But I bet he loves you unconditionally. That makes dogs AND cats better than people in many cases.
Does the pet follow instructions?
Dogs = 80%
Cats = 2%
So, I don't much care which "response" THEY consider a sign of intelligence.
Cats just focus on the important stuff.
Never saw a cat eat its own turd
Or drink out of the toilet bowl
Just saying
I too love cats. The are FAR more subtle than dogs, which is one way of looking at intelligence. The fact that dogs seem so overtly eager to accept training, and that they appear obsequious, is not necessarily expressive of intellect. Some would say it is more of a slavish or peasant-like mentality.
“...Or drink out of the toilet bowl”
Cats will drink out of a toilet bowl. All of my cats have done this. That said, cats are remarkably intelligent, but not in the obsequious manner akin to dogs. If it has to do with hunting or killing (either offensively or defensively), nothing on earth tops a cat. They are designed to hurt and/or kill.
Go acquaint yourself with a German Shepherd.
“Or drink out of the toilet bowl”
My male cat drinks from the toilet bowl.
Dogs excel at jobs, and I used to think they were very intelligent, but a lot of this seems to be instincts and aptitudes bred into them by humans. Also, I think dogs appear to be more intelligent to humans because dogs are more social (in nature they work in packs, and have a social order) than cats and seem to communicate or emote a lot more than they do. But both of these are traits, not intelligence, in my opinion. I see dogs repeat things a lot until they get something good with a lot of trail and error and still not always learning from it until there is more reinforcement, where as I see cats really working things out with problem solving and once they pick up new information or a new skill, they’ve got it.
Is that intelligence or obedience? Your comment just has me thinking.
I am a dog person, would never own a cat, though I get great entertainment playing with other peoples cats!
And my dog isn't THIS dumb.
Have been around them most of my life. They learn well if you teach them well.
Had a Labrador that was the stupidest thing of four legs..........
Had a dog that would do that without the laser.............
Like cats as well as dogs but there is no way to overcome my allergic reaction to them. We had a golden doodle that I would characterize as the “best dog ever” despite it taking 4-5 years for her to settle down. I miss our daily walks and her always cheerful greeting even as she suffered from cancer.
And without a clear definition, it is difficult to compare the intellect of dogs, cats, other animals, and humans.
There are many ways that animals are much smarter than humans.
That’s true, a Shepherd certainly requires instruction and a master.
The dumbest dog I’ve met, and I feel bad for saying this ‘cuz she was very sweet, was a Dalmation.
As far as cat intelligence goes, I have a 20 lbs butterball named Stormy who shares the house with three German Shepherds, so I have to give her credit for smarts being able to survive the wolf pack here.
