European Union officials are working on tougher car emissions standards aimed at fighting global warming — but which the auto industry cautions could hurt workers and consumers.

Officials from the council of EU member governments, parliament and the executive Commission were to negotiate Wednesday in the wake of environment ministers’ agreement late Tuesday to lower average emissions of carbon dioxide by 35 percent from 2021.

The Commission had initially proposed 30 percent, and the parliament voted for 40 percent; talks now aim to reach a final agreement.

Some European officials expressed disappointment that the 35 percent goal agreed on under the compromise wasn’t tougher, following a UN climate panel’s warning about the consequences of failing to contain global warming. The European industry association said car makers support reducing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, but cautioned that the proposed reduction risks harming companies’ competitiveness.

Germany’s VDA auto industry said the 35 percent agreement among governments “missed the chance to formulate the regulation in a way that is realistic technically and economically.” …

And of course the elites will be able to 1) buy their way out of any increased costs, 2) have their governments give them transportation/flights, or most probably 3) just plain cheat and do whatever they wish whilst the hoi-pelloi put up with trains, taxis and other cr*p.

They should hold off until dry-electrode lithium-ion batteries become commercially available. Just that could double the range of electric cars, making former VW CEO Martin Winterkorn’s claim that we could soon get electric cars going 800 km (497 miles) on a single charge not so far-fetched.

Perhaps they should just standardize the type of autos produced for the masses. Something along the lines of say...”a people’s car”.

As usual, their politicians will run their mouths, virtue signal and agree to some resolution. They will puff their chests out and take some potshots at big bad America for not virtue signaling in kind.

Then, when leaned on by local companies who will explain just how much all this will cost, they’ll quietly drop any such requirements. Their rank hypocrisy will conveniently never be mentioned.

Rinse, Repeat.

The EU is not the USA. They’ve never met a regulation they didn’t like.
