Soyuz Booster Malfunction
Spaceflight Now ^ | Vanity

Posted on 10/11/2018 2:01:07 AM PDT by cabojoe

The problem occurred as the booster stages of the Soyuz rocket separated. Mission control in Houston confirms that the crew will be attempting a ballistic reentry. A sharp descent that will hopefully allow them to land downrange.

The two people onboard were cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and Nick Hague of NASA. The third passenger place was reserved for cargo.

The Russian Soyuz spacecraft made emergency landing in Kazakhstan after its rocket booster malfunctioned. Both crew members on board are alive and unharmed.
The spacecraft, carrying cosmonaut Alexey Ovchining and NASA’a Nick Hague, had successfully landed about 20-25 kilometers from Zhezkazgan, central Kazakhstan. Four helicopters were sent to pick up the crewmembers.

“The crew has landed. Everyone is alive,” Russian space chief Dmitry Rogozin wrote on Twitter.

NASA confirmed the space capsule’s successful landing and said that the crew are “in good condition and in contact.”

I guess training to the point of muscle memory works again.

They did not have much time to make a decision. They just pulled the plug. Rocket travel is a dangerous thing.

The last inflight failure of a crewed Soyuz rocket was the Soyuz 18 on 5 April 1975. In that case the Soyuz aborted at T+295 seconds. The crew, which was headed to the Salyut 4 space station, experienced 21 G during descent their descent but landed safely.

I saw this as a minor article on Drudge. I would think this would be a major headline story.

As usual, the Daily Mail has great coverage.

They have several videos, one from inside the capsule.

Since we pay Russia for flights up to the International Space Station, do we get a refund?

I’d say the refund is getting our guy back on the ground, safely. At least that’s good enough for me!

Not even a coupon good for a free upgrade on our next flight?
