Finding Joe Murphy: How Red Wings' No. 1 pick became homeless
NBC Sports ^ | 23 Aug 2018 | Charlie Roumeliotis

Does he have chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the degenerative disease believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head? Murphy’s biggest contract came in 1996 when he signed a three-year, $10-million deal to join the St. Louis Blues.

“If I loved it, I would have kept it,” Murphy says of his money. “But I didn’t love it.”

Murphy offers few specifics.

“Well, how I lost it,” he says. “Forty percent went to taxes. Gone. After my taxes, I gotta pay my agent. Then, I got divorced. Then, I got payments. I made an investment — boom! It was like that. After, I had a little left over, so I invested in other things. Black jack, I invested in, I liked the Johnny Walker, a little bit of wine. Cigars. Ladies.”

He laughs.

And the rest of the money he just squandered.

More on Joe Murphy at an unlinkable site: Detroit Free Press.

Very interesting and all too common.

More self-inflicted problems.

Slums are in people’s heads. The garbage, graffiti, and burned-out abandoned houses are just the physical manifestation of thought patterns.

I didn’t fritter it away, but I was homeless after my divorce for about nine months. One of the best things that ever happened to me in hindsight.

I know the value of everything, and I want everything I have.

Agreed. Atheletes and entertainers (same thing in a sense really). Many seem to have a hard time managing their finances.

And the rest of the money he just squandered.

“I also gave a ton of money,” he says. “I just felt I was that type of person. I bought a house for this one guy. I bought a house for my parents. My dad had a hard time. Then, I got a car, truck. Then, I got them two cars.”

If there is one constant theme in his explanations, it is that he has given away his money.

“I helped a lot of people, from animals, to underprivileged,” Murphy says. “I gave a lot of stuff to people. I did in my heart. I did because I like to help them. And in that giving, I’ve been receiving back. I didn’t do it to get anything from it. I wouldn’t tell anybody.”

Lots of former NFL players are in the same boat.

Too many blows to the head, too little education, and lots of poor decisions.

I remember when he was cut by the Capitols after he got into a fight over a girl in New York. The girls boyfriend smashed a bottle over his head.

I can’t exactly agree that CTE led to his poor decisions. Many, MANY players pee away their money on things like whiskey, women and song. Taking all those hits didn’t help ... but it’s not like he was a good steward of this own finances before that.

Being seriously hardcore poor is an experience every person should have at some point in their lives. It really helps clarify what is important and what is not, and provides a spiritual enrichment for which no other experience can substitute.

That’s why so many religious orders include a vow of poverty. They know.

CTE is certainly becoming the all-encompassing boogeyman for anytime something goes wrong in any contact athlete's life.

An article in the Detroit Free Press claims that he is homeless and living on the streets of Kenora, Ontario.

That’s WAY up there. Gets pretty damned cold there.

“More self-inflicted problems.”
Possible, in this instance, not probable.

Have you had the misfortune of having your head damaged?

RVN 1969, major head wound.
I believe that I received the very best care possible at the time, on the Hospital Ship Sanctuary. State of the art.

2012 A car I did not see, head crushed like a dropped egg, not a mark on my helmet. Twenty days hospital, months of rehab. Again I believe that everyone at Alexian Brothers provided me with the very best available services.
I HAD gold-plated insurance at that time.

This guy gets clocked and returns to the ice!
Not good for long-term recovery.

I would like to point out a key issue in his homelessness... it is in NORTHERN ONTARIO.

There are many more beneficial local climates in which one could be homeless, and eliminate the survival concern of not freezing to death during ~1/2 of each year. I’m sure he could hitch a ride to one.

Sounds like a very nice man. Generous to a fault.

I know a few people like him, although without the large paychecks. I’m sure he has his own demons to fight just like the rest of us.

Perhaps all he really needed was a true friend.

All this guy does is drive around ghettoes, slums and run down neighborhoods. I find it very addicting to watch, also very sad. Two things I don’t get.....trash everywhere and nobody bothers to pick it up and all the people standing around, mostly on street corners. One needs to have pride in themselves and their surroundings IMO.

I’ve watched a lot of CharlieBo313 videos.

Maybe they all have head trauma too.

Yes, but all homeless franchises for highway exits in Phoenix are taken.
