As long as he pays the royalties, they can’t control who plays it.

Isn’t this the same as GM telling the POTUS to stop being driven around in a Cadillac, Coke telling him not to drink Diet Coke and McDonalds telling him no to eat a Big Mac?

Pretty sure Prince himself was a Republican, though I’m unsure if he’d be a Trump supporter.

Prince didn't state publicly much of anything political in his entire career. I can think of two songs mildly political, but for a catalog as big as his, that isn't much. He did not participate in the Live-Aid craze where everyone had to virtual signal and sing on record to somehow fix starvation in Ethiopia. With all of his fighting with record companies he understood how to protect his brand and shut up and sing.

Yup. How many times has Chrissie Hynde say to Rush Limbaugh to stop playing her song?

Ironically, Prince was a conservative.

“How many times has Chrissie Hynde say to Rush Limbaugh to stop playing her song?”

Not many/any, I believe. Her parents are conservatives and they like Rush, so even though she doesn’t like him playing it too much, she’s OK with it. (At least that’s what Rush said a couple decades ago.)

I expected that Purple Rain was being played to suggest that a lot of Blue is going to go Purple in November.

If this song is within a subscription catalog such as ASCAP, it is legally available to use for yearly subscription fee (along with thousands of others). But... since the estate is asking politely, it would be easy to move along to a less schleppy, mildewed rock ballad. Purple Rain is a tired old overplayed tune that ranks right down there with Freeburd, Frampton, and Stairway.

Maybe something with a heartbeat would be better.

That Pretenders song is now so linked to Limbaugh that when I hear it play for real on the radio, I expect to hear Rush’s voice after the opening riff.

Not sure about being Republican. Prince did do a super-secret private concert at the WH for Obozo and Mooch and supported the BLM movement. But he also was very business oriented and may not care so long as he was getting paid.

As Ronald Reagan famously declared, when they tried to shut his microphone off, "I'm PAYING for this microphone!". So, too, is DJT paying the royalties.

The Prince estate can suck it.
