Colorado and Wyoming residents woke up Sunday to find that an early season snowstorm had blanketed their homes and roadways with up to a foot (30 centimeters) of snow and sent temperatures plunging overnight.

The storm caused crashes, snarled traffic and temporarily closed some major highways due to icy conditions.

The heaviest snow fell in an area stretching from Boulder, Colorado, through Wyoming to Montana’s Beartooth Mountains. The National Weather Service reported snowfall measuring between 3 and 13 inches (8 to 33 centimeters) south of Sheridan, Wyoming, over the last 24 hours.

About 3 inches (8 centimeters) of snow fell in Denver, where the temperature dropped from 60 degrees (16°C) on Saturday to 20 degrees (–7°C) Sunday morning. …

I remember a similar snow storm thirty or so years ago this month when the “El Nino” fear was being pushed. The 40-29 weather chick was standing outside in the dark, 800 miles from the storm and said...”The question that is on everyone’s mind...(then she looks into the camera with a look of terror on her face...) IS THIS EL NINO?”

I was tempted to throw a boot through the screen.

Feels like Winter is coming early in the Midwest.

Darn it. I was hoping it would wait and be late again.

Hope I’m wrong.

This isn't unusual for us, and we'll warm back up soon. This snow is good to have, as both last winter and this summer didn't give us a lot of water.

Totally expected. We are going through a period of low sunspots. As a minimum, the average of the next couple of years will be cooler.

I hear you.

This coming Thursday, it’s going to be in the high 20s overnight where I live, though.

A lot of grain is standing in deep snow, both in Canada and the US. The harvest is degraded, so expect some up-shift in pricing. If forced to shift to varieties with shorter growing seasons, yield per unit area will suffer as much as 25%.

We now have more options than Europeans at the beginning of the Maunder Minimum, which should allow us to avoid major loss of livestock and human famine. The Asian market may find strong competitive bidding upon the commodity agriculture products, should this cooler wet weather persist past this years harvest.

Colorado usually gets a light snow in the middle of October. Then, it gets back to Indian Summer with highs in the mid 60’s. It is realistic to see a high of 61 in December. It is also realistic to see a low of 5 in January. Denver temps. Colder in the higher elevations.
