The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate has faced open attempts on the part of the occupation authorities in Crimea to drive it out of the peninsula or underground.
In just the first year of the occupation, 38 out of 46 parishes ceased to exist, and in at very least three cases, churches were seized by the occupation regime: in Sevastopol; Simferopol and in the village of Perevalne.
On October 9, Archbishop Klyment, the Head of the Church in Crimea, explained that up till now, the Russian occupation regime has been at least somewhat restrained in its offensive out of fear that this could provoke measures from the Ukrainian authorities with respect to the Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
Archbishop Klyment has been tireless in his defense of political prisoners and in reporting human rights violations.
With the Russian Orthodox Church having reacted very aggressively to Constantinoples apparent willingness to grant autocephaly, or autonomous status, and Russian state propaganda media full of dire warnings of imminent bloodshed as a result, the Church in Crimea is likely to find itself in an even more vulnerable position.

The Putin-suckers will be along in a moment to explain to us why the Russians are 100% justified in doing this inside illegally occupied Ukrainian territory.
As usual, MeganC, I love your clarity on this matter. You recognize the evils of secular-EU-globalism *and* the fake Christianity behind Putinism. God bless you! :)
P.S. Supporting Ukraine’s historic identity, sovereignty, and independence (notably its ecclesial independence within Orthodoxy) is not the same as praising the current Ukrainian president and government, but believing the country’s long term future overall will be better off unshackled from Moscow’s chains.
Sadly, the War in Eastern Ukraine rages on. But the geo-spiritual forces are moving in the right direction.
The Great Patriotic War Against Russian Imperialism does indeed wear on but at least the Ukrainians have a friend in President Trump. I appreciated the President mentioning that the US has sent the Ukrainians a bunch of American anti-tank missiles and I only hope that the Russians appreciate this gift as well!
Russia needs to get out of Ukraine and that includes Crimea.
Amen. And GOD, not Putin will have the final say.
And yes, loved Trump’s responses to CBS! :)
Thanks for posting this. Americans have mostly forgotten how much Ukraine is suffering.
