Moon Science! NASA Needs Experiment Ideas for Commercial Lunar Landers

NASA is keeping an open mind as to what precisely those commercial landers will look like, although the agency does want projects that have a scientific or technological focus. "We are looking for ways to not only conduct lunar science but to also use the moon as a science platform to look back at the Earth, observe the sun, or view the vast universe," Clarke said. "In terms of technology, we are interested in those instruments or systems that will help future missions — both human and robotic — explore the moon and feed forward to future Mars missions."

In order to be selected, projects must be able to fly no later than December 2021. Proposals are due Nov. 19. But if that deadline is coming up too quickly, don't panic — NASA says it will look for another round of suggestions in about a year.

I have yet another dumb question: Is it really possible to design and build a lunar lander, and have it reviewed and accepted by NASA in the time allowed?

Dark side of the moon would be a nifty place for a telescope.

Bigger question, do they have the authority to tell someone else they can’t risk their life?

There is no permanent dark side of the moon. There is a near side we can see and a far side we can’t, but any point gets two weeks of sun and two weeks of darkness.

Try and grow a few crops on the moon. All the things needed for that will make for some interesting problems to solve.

“do they have the authority to tell someone else they can’t risk their life?”

Interesting question. Why wouldn’t they have that authority?.

Would they hire civilians or military, or some combination of both? It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds. I’m kind of excited about the prospects.

“There is no dark side
of the moon really.
Matter of fact
it’s all dark.”

Obviously you are incorrect. The Moon is flat and only has two sides. One is always dark. /s

Of course there is no ‘dark side’ of the moon.

It’s all dark!

If they have no monetary interest, they would have no say.

It really doesn’t have any advantage two weeks of sunlight for each side and out of radio contact with the Earth always, unless they have a geo lunar satellite deployed to relay coms.

USe an off the shelf electric propulsion system for an electric car. Better just buy a Tesla and give it monster tires

Especially a radio telescope, with the moon blocking Earth sourced radio signals.

Now a radio telescope would be a good thing.
