The victims were standing on the railway tracks watching celebrations for the Hindu festival of Dusshera, eyewitnesses told BBC Punjabi.
They did not hear the train approach as they watched a firecracker-filled effigy of the demon king Ravana burn. Officials said the priority now was to take the injured to local hospitals.
Footage posted to social media showed the fast-travelling train hitting the crowd.
The incident happened at about 18:30 local time (13:00 GMT), said local journalist Ravinder Singh Robin. Just moments before, crowds watching the firecrackers show were asked by organisers to move back - towards the railway tracks, reports say.

Will they be reincarnated as railroad spikes?
One things for sure. They won’t be singing Blest Be the Ties that Bind
I’m always amazed no one hears the train. But with the fireworks....
Still, I imagine standing on railroad tracks in any country, regardless, is a bad idea.
Wonder if it was the Long Black Train.
Time for new glasses. I thought that headline said “Soros Dead”.
That’ll be the day.
Sounds like Ravana got his revenge.
At first glance I thought it said Ameristar
Apparently Ravan has a fan club. And a violent one at that!

“The outfit has written to government offices and police officials in various districts across the state demanding action against programmes held for burning the effigy of Ravan.
“Bhim Army workers have opposed the tradition of burning the effigy of Ravan on Dussehra claiming that Ravan is a symbol of humanitarian culture and an idol for many Adivasi and Bahujan (tribal and backward) communities. The outfit has written to government offices and police officials in various districts across the state demanding action against programmes held for burning the effigy of Ravan.
“On Monday, the Pune unit of Bhim Army submitted a letter to the Pune City Police, Special Branch, stating that burning Ravans effigy hurts the sentiments of those from Scheduled Castes and Schedule Tribes (SC and ST). The outfit asked the police to refuse permission for Ravan Dahan (burning of Ravans effigy) programmes. Bhim Army has also demanded that if anyone conducts Ravan Dahan programme, offence should be lodged against the organisers under The Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
“The outfit has said if this does not happen, the members will come out on the streets to oppose Ravan Dahan and the police administration would be responsible for any law and order situation. Bhim Army district president Datta Pol, women wing president Neeta Adsule and others claim that Ravan symbolises a glorious culture and he was a king who believed in equality and justice. But the history was distorted and Ravan was presented as a villain for thousands of years, the letter said”
No they never heard the whistle
Toot toot
They’re clear out of sight
Ever see pictures of them crowded on trains there? They’re all over it and can hardly make out the outline of the train.
“Scores dead”
And the train weighed how many stones?
I have a deathly fear of standing on railroad tracks. Others may call it common sense.
Or “That long Black Train”

“Wonder if it was the Long Black Train.”
You’re watching ‘Yellowstone’ too? I love that show! They get so many things right in it!
The people killed were all known to jaywalk without looking both ways before crossing the road. It was a minor miracle they lived this long. /s
I shouldn’t make fun but who doesn’t look for a train coming when they are on train tracks?
“Right over here my little Bollywood princess....there is plenty of room. Here, sit here on this rail. See, I told you I would find some veddy, veddy good seats.”
