No one was injured in the emergency landing, which one California Highway Patrol official called "nothing short of a miracle."
A student-pilot had been preparing to land at nearby Gillespie Field when the engine failed, according to CHP.
The instructor took control of the aircraft and managed to land the plane safely, avoiding homes, power lines and traffic as he touched down on the busy highway, originally blocking two lanes of freeway before guiding the plane to the Mollison Avenue off-ramp for I-8 West, which was still blocked as of 4 p.m.
The site of the landing was less than two miles from Gillespie Field. Officials said that mechanics may have to be called to remove the plane's wings, because the aircraft was too wide to tow to the airfield.

“You see? That’s how it’s done. Now we’re going up again, son, and I want you to try it.”
He merged into the fast lane of the I8. Nice.
No, the video does NOT show the the flight instructor landing the airplane.
Uhhhhh .... why not fuel her up and just take off ?
Well, they might want to fix the engine first.
No, the video does NOT show the the flight instructor landing the airplane.
The video does show a plane landing on the freeway, but since we can not “know” who landed it, I guess your statement is true /s
Idiot drivers just keep on going, passing the plane, etc.
People need to get to where they’re going. Nobody is going to wait and get stuck behind the closure.
Thanks for the post - I’d skipped the link originally, then went back to it to watch the landing which was really neat.
I think the initial commenter missed the fact there were two videos - the first was just some random talking head blabbing next to the parked plane. But the second one was worth looking for - and the way cars were passing on the right, you almost got the impression California drivers come across planes on their freeways as a routine occurrence.
On the Gardenstate parkway In Jersey, the plane would've gotten stuck behind at late 80's model maroon Caddy in the left lane with its turn signal on all the way to A.C. .
In Philly, drivers (uninsured) would be cutting in front of him and “brake checking” the plane.

Being originally from the area, I can certify this as accurate. The potshots from a .38 special would be celebratory firecracker noise...
Overhead lines and obstructions.....
It’s fairly easy to take off the wings and truck it out....
MY video clip must have “clipped” that
Luckily, he was flying over some grazing land and was able to land safely about 10 feet from a fence. Needless to say, his checkride got delayed about 10 days but he passed with flying colors!
Okay. The thing that struck me was just how stupid these reporters are. I mean, the pilot didn’t panic nor did the drivers of the cars on the freeway. Nobody lost their cool and as a result everybody walked away.
Not a miracle at all. Every student pilot is taught to make engine out landings. On my first flight test the check pilot turned off the fuel flow to observe my reaction. (I took the plane down to about 20 feet above some open field.)
ML/NJ
Karen Black & Charleton Heston landed it.
Idiot drivers just keep on going, passing the plane, etc.

Reporter states pilot landed on the freeway, then rolled out on an exit ramp! I’d say that was very courteous of him not to tie up the freeway.
