When it was discovered earlier this month that the 1809 build of Windows 10 was deleting user files just because, Microsoft halted the update until the problem was fixed. Shame, then, that another not-as-bad-but-still-bad file overwriting bug has now reared its head.
Over the weekend, several users on Reddit reported that Windows 10's in-built interface for compressed archive won't actually extract files properly. Instead, it just "fails silently", which is not something you want when it comes to data.
Here's a concise explanation of the bug from user "Wazhai" on Reddit:
The issue is that in 1809, overwriting files by extracting from an archive using File Explorer doesn’t result in an overwrite prompt dialogue and also doesn’t replace any files at all; it just fails silently. There are also some reports that it did overwrite items, but did so silently without asking.
Yikes.
The good news is, if you use a third-party app for archives, such as WinZip, WinRAR or 7-Zip, you won't encounter the bug.
Still, for the time being, you might want to double-check your file operations until Microsoft releases a fix.
I've never been a fan of Windows Explorer's built-in ZIP-like functions (Compressed Folders and the like) because there are too many cases where they fail (like nested ZIPs).
But this is something new -- overwriting files, or failing silently... not good, not good.

Of course the usual bullshit. Put it out to market before it has been fully reviewd and tested. Let the user beware anything from Microsoft is not dependable.
I just returned to a former employer. They are still on Windows 7 Pro, and they intend to stick with it as long as possible. It’s a medium sized engineering company in Texas.
Microsoft has become a joke. A bad joke.
Point taken. But there aren’t many articles on Win7 these days. Microsoft has told the world for years now that Win7 is dead, that Win10 is the only True Windows. The tech writers have fallen into line and follow the Redmond narrative.
There’s just not much to write. Win7 is stable, and doesn’t have the problems that plague Win10. It has its limitations, but for most of us they’re not severe enough to have migrated.
Tonight I ran Windows updates on all my Win7 boxes: A Fujitsu laptop running Pro 64, a dual-boot Mac Mini running Ultimate 64, and my trusty old VMware VM running Pro 32. They all updated perfectly and quickly. As they always have.
I -do- expect that as the Jan 2020 End-of-Support date approaches, there will be a flood of tech articles on Win7 — about how it’s Really Important To Migrate To Windows 10. *sigh*

ah crap, thanks for the warning.
And I wouldn’t be surprised if, as the did with WinXP, REALLY severe security issues will get patched even after the drop dead date.

Dayglo, I know you, so I'm gonna give you a pass; but I'd ask that you tread lightly here. There are several security issues, some public, some not, that are plaguing Win7. MS isn't going to continue to patch them after Jan 2020, and if you're not moved over to 10, you're going to have a bad time.
There's a difference between stability and security. One does not always translate to the other.

I worked for General Dynamics. They adopted Windows 7 while the rest of the world was already going to Windows 10. The reason is, a defense/government user group took that long to test it for bugs that could be exploited and get with Microsoft for solutions. Their IT manager told me that their system was assaulted around 30,000 times per day. I asked if it was the Russians or Chinese. He said, “Neither. It mostly tracks back to Berkeley.”
Once GD had to shut down worldwide IT operations because somebody was opening his private email on his system at work. A deadly bug got in and infected the entire system. So, the danger is there and it’s real. But convincing the more liberal users to follow procedures is very difficult.

You're quire correct, rarestia; I was less than precise in my comment. I meant with regard to Windows Updates, not security overall. I've had no problems with any Windows 7 updates in many years. With Win10, I've been lucky overall, although a few minor things went sideways, and one upgrade required a re-install.
I'm just disappointed as all get-out that the recent Win10 updates are being done so poorly. IMO it's a sign of sloppy engineering and/or quality control. There's just no excuse -- this is 2018. Good Software Eng/QA is a solved problem, you just have to DO IT.
With regard to security, of course, you are entirely on point to correct my comment, thanks.
My company is migrating to a Linux ecosystem. Zero Microsoft products or technologies will remain.
Microsoft is an Indian company now and its really stupid decisions and poor product quality has been getting worse by the day.
Seeing your info about the upcoming end-of-support for Win7 reminded me to ask... Do you know when the end-of-support will be for Win 8.1?

Oh BTW, I also have a WIN XP on my other laptop (Dell) which I found, by coincidence while cleaning my closet. It still works. It must be me but it’s faster than my company’s WIN 10 laptops for some reason...

XP's security patches stopped in 2014, except for one extraordinary patch issued after that for a major vulnerability across all platforms.
Software expands to consume resources. Win10 runs no faster, on average, than Win7 or WinXP, and XP will sometimes beat it. For a real thrill, run a copy of Win98SE on modern hardware. It screams.
Just don't you dare connect it to the internet. :-)
My latest update is 1803. My One Drive disappeared, again, but came back when I restarted the machine.
