It’s Friday afternoon and I’m tired so let’s end on a lighter note. Long-running character Apu is going to be written out of the Simpsons forever. There has been controversy about the character, who speaks in a stereotypical Indian accent, for several years. Earlier this year producer Adi Shankar launched a spec script competition looking to somehow subvert or possibly put an end to the character. Shankar doesn’t work on the Simpsons but was hoping that if the idea caught on and the spec script was good enough, maybe the show would embrace the idea and produce it. But today Shankar told Indie Wire that he has heard the Simpsons plans to simply drop the character without much fanfare:

Of course, the hillbillie white redneck accent is acceptible!!! Why not make all characters of all shows computer generated? -sarc
Better to have NO Indian at all.
That makes sense. I suspect other characters of color will just not be depicted for fear of offending someone, somewhere.

what about groundskeeper Willie? Scots are not like he is represented...such bigotry.
So it is okay ro get rid of Indians because they’re offensive? Have they asked Indian people or is this just another example of privileged white college liberals acting offended and speaking for everyone else? Is the Scottish janitor next?
Haven’t watched the show since 2002, and this really makes me sad.
The guy was a admirable character that loved his job, family, and loved being an american + he was a proud gun owner.
I knew it was coming..I will never watch another episode, Oh wait, I stopped watching in the 90’s.. except an occational halloween episode..

Apu was one of the few normal characters on the show ... successful small business owner, common sense, etc. ... yes, that’s definitely a terrible was to depict east indians ...

No biggie to me. I’ve never watched the show.
And he has octuplets.
I watch a few episodes on FX every so often.
