The remains of five people, probably two women and three children, were found in a bedroom in Pompeii on Wednesday.
The group probably took refuge in the bedroom in a desperate attempt to escape a shower of volcanic rocks that had filled the house, Pompeii director Massimo Osanna told ANSA.
"It's a shocking discovery, but also very important for the history of studies," Osanna said.
The skeletons were found in a house where a charcoal inscription was recently found backing the theory that the Mount Vesuvius eruption that destroyed the ancient Roman city took place in October of 79 AD, not August.
New excavations have taken place at the site, in the Regio V of Pompeii.

In before the inane and repetitive "graverobbing" snarks.
At least they passed together.
Are you sure its not CMXI?
It's 8 minutes that give me a chill every time I watch it.
Theyd be dead now anyway but it is Trumps fault.
Yeah now its Trump’s fault....used to be Reagan’s, before that Nixon’s....I guess before that Hoover’s!
Thanks, I'll check it out (I think I've seen it). In one of the buried towns, in a gymnasium, the balls were still piled up for some game that was pupular in the Roman Empire; possibly the players were getting ready to play, and had to run for it. The House of the Vettei, which is a popular one to visit I guess, was undergoing repairs and renovations, probably onlgoing for years, when it was buried. The owners of the house were freedmen, and their neighbors were bankers (there was only private lending in Roman times) whose records included debts owed or formerly owed by the freedmen. In Herculaneum the pyroclastic flow covered the town in minutes, and due to the lack of oxygen the organic materials were disproportionately preserved compared with Pompeii. In H the famous scroll library was found -- all packed in boxes and ready to flee with -- and doors were carbonized, and still swing on their hinges.
translated it said: "Kilroy was here"
How long would it take to dispatch an emergency chariot anyway?
IX-I-I is correct.
Democrats have been blaming Republicans for every calamity since...Lincoln!

I dont really know why, but both Pompeii and thr Titanic fascinate me.
There is no IX on the phone.
I grok that, I used to be a Lions fan. I've seen the Titanic exhibit, but I'll never see the actual Titanic, OTOH I've got a reasonable shot at seeing Pompeii. :^)
