Maybe thats all that was needed for its mission. Have you seen the pictures of "the giant saucer" purportedly "siphoning plasma" from the sun? Maybe this object was just here to drop supplies to aliens with munchies preparing for invasion.
Then again, maybe its just the tube that from which Gods original seventh day cigar came.
