Congo's Ebola fight complicated by war and suspicion over vaccine [seen as 'satanic']

The idea is pretty simple: track down everyone who has been in contact with an Ebola victim and provide them with a newly available vaccine developed in Canada.

It has not been approved by major health authorities but it has shown itself to be effective in early trials. There is problem with the plan however. First, many city residents do not want to be tracked down and secondly, they do not want the vaccine.

"Lots of people reject the vaccine and they talk a lot about it. They say if you take it you will become infertile, it will kill you, it has bad effects."

"They think they are going to be killed," he said. "The vaccine is from Satan."

The head of World Health Organisation, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, told Sky News he has never had to deal with an epidemic so complicated.

"The situation with this outbreak is very different from other outbreaks," he said.

This is working better than could possibly be hoped for.

Propagating and keeping Ebola endemic in the population is excellent control, and should severely overload the social safety net, such as it is, in those African provinces where the outbreaks occur, thus much simplifying the assertion of some form of command-and-control regime.

Repression takes many forms.

Persistence of the virus
Ebola virus can remain in certain body fluids after a person has recovered from the infection. These fluids are semen, breast milk, ocular (eye) fluid, and spinal column fluid. Areas of the body that contain these fluids are known as immunologically privileged sites. These are sites of the body where viruses and pathogens, like Ebola virus, can remain undetected even after the immune system has cleared the virus from other sites of the body. Scientists are now studying how long the virus stays in these body fluids among Ebola survivors.
