Louisville fired head coach Bobby Petrino on Sunday, the school annonced. The Cardinals are 2–8 in 2018, losing 54-23 to Syracuse on Friday. Petrino's buyout is "estimated to be in the $14 million range" per Forde. "We want to thank Bobby for guiding our football program to some of the better seasons we have had historically at UofL," Vince Tyra, Lousiville's vice president and director of athletics, said in a statement. "However, at this time we feel the program needs different leadership and we owe it to our student-athletes and fans to turn this around."

I imagine the Papa John's guy did not give a cent for the buyout since Louisville disowned him. Where did Louisville come up with $14+ MM for a buyout. Did Adidas send over a truck load of cash?

Louisville must not have very good lawyers.

That sounds really high for them. I can’t imagine many coaches wanting to walk into that situation but I guess they will find one.

The rumor mill is Louisville will empty the bank accounts, call Adidas for money, and shake every last cent from boosters to get alumni Jeff Brohm from Purdue.

Win a whole bunch of Division I football games and then lose a whole bunch of Division I football games?

This is a bad deal for Louisville EVER to have given Petrino precisely because Petrino was fired with-cause for getting into a motorcycle accident with his girlfriend-on-the-side at his previous job at the University of Arkansas. How did a coach, who essentially had nowhere else to go but the school he previously coached at and had a history with, EVER get that kind of buyout in his deal? I guess he can afford a few more motorcycles now.

Or just be Charlie Weis and use Bill Belichick’s coat tails to BS your way to two college coaching gigs.

If I remember right Petrino was given an extension by Louisville when he was winning games with Lamar Jackson as QB. Once Lamar left for the NFL the house of cars collapsed.

You may be right. I am just a simple professor at a D-3 school who is also the faculty rep to the NCAA.

Petrino is 77–35 over nine years at Louisville.
He has the second-most wins in program history,
trailing only Frank Camp.

68.75 winning percentage

Why do colleges sign on for these ridiculous buy-out amounts? Petrino had what one could charitably call, baggage. Still they hired him.

It cost the University of Maryland $5M to fire DJ Durkin after one of his players died.

I suspect very few people can consistently work as hard as one needs to work to succeed at the level fans expect at a top tier football program, and maintain that intensity and focus for 20 or 30 years. So, if you don’t want to burn yourself out (get divorced, never see your kids, etc.) and have interests in life besides football, the trick appears to be to work your butt off for 5-10 years to get hired at a top program. Work hard for another 5 years until you’ve locked in a huge buyout. Then slack off, get fired, collect your buyout checks, and enjoy life.

Unless you get high enough to get others to do the heavy lifting for you. Nick Sabin has that deal.

“I suspect very few people can consistently work as hard as one needs to work to succeed at the level” What does that have to do with Louisville football?
