Comic Book Industry Reacts To Bill Maher Dissing Stan Lee And Comic Books
Comicbook.com ^ | 11/17/18 | Adam Barnhardt

Television personality Bill Maher penned an op-ed on his blog railing against the comic book industry in the wake of the passing of former Marvel Comics publisher Stan Lee. Maher dropped lines like "I don’t think it’s a huge stretch to suggest that Donald Trump could only get elected in a country that thinks comic books are important," along with mocking fans who were mourning the loss of the beloved comic creator.

"But then twenty years or so ago, something happened – adults decided they didn’t have to give up kid stuff," Maher ranted. "And so they pretended comic books were actually sophisticated literature. And because America has over 4,500 colleges – which means we need more professors than we have smart people – some dumb people got to be professors by writing theses with titles like Otherness and Heterodoxy in the Silver Surfer."

Naturally, several individuals in the comic book industry took to social media to share their response to Maher's post.

Keep scrolling to see the response from various comic creators.

Maher’s right about comic books but wrong to link the phenomenon (adult worship of comics) to Donald Trump’s rise. If anything, left/liberalism is much more the comic culture of American life. Trump is only relevant to the extent that he holds up a mirror to the contradictions and inanities of contemporary liberalism.

Nice Bill; but I think we all know how the author of “Otherness and Heterodoxy in the Silver Surfer” voted.

Gee Billy boy - 20 years ago people turned to comedians like you and Jon Stewart as they thought they were being informed when in reality you were propagandizing. This trend has only continued and it perplexed me that your shoddy, dinwitted opinions are considered so important by your equally dinwitted and sheep acting audience.

But then you further believe your own lies when you wonder why people prefer comic books to actual intellectual thought.

Take a look in the mirror pal.

I started to read comics in college... eventually moved away from them.. tried them again recently and they are drivel mostly anymore. They were never deep literature, but they have been taken over by SJW and Diversity crapola.. with writing that is barely one dimensional.

again I don’t expect great works of literature, but they generally are written at a kindergarten level now...

Pseudo-intellectual moron. He’s truly a smarmy idiot. What exactly is he good at? Can he save lives? Is he an engineer? An inventor? Does he create inspiring works of art? Does he spend much of his life helping others? As far as I can tell, all he really does is criticize people and act superior, like lots of other narcissists.

I thought he had already achieved that.

But he is of course correct here.

Maher and Acosta, the two guys who tied for first place in the annual “Who would you like to punch in the nose?” contest.

Of course, he’s not talking about anyone with fond memories of the comic books of their youth.

He’s talking about those who get especially pretentious about “graphic novels”.

Poor Maher; I guess that penis enlargement treatment didn’t work out for him.

He’s still a sorry sad nut sack of penis envy. Poor little guy...

Stan Lee was easily one of the most creative men of the 20th and 21st centuries, and a pretty cool cat in general.

Bill can only wish he had a tenth of Stan Lee’s talent.

The comic books I liked were such as Scrooge McDuck, Nancy and Sluggo, Mighty Mouse, Priscilla’s Pop, Smilin’ Jack, Felix the cat ...

Comics back in the 80s and 90s were showing a lot of depth and decent stories. These days they (like all of media) have shifted to SJW pseudo-intellectual shlock. Basically like everything else these days. Stan Lee’s creations were never deep - though they were iconic and entertaining.

Of course the punchline is comics are like any other form of mass entertainment. Sturgeon’s Law always, 90% crap. But that 10%, that’s why we read or watch or listen to anything. The great part with comics now is the field is so wide. So much that isn’t superheroes. I don’t read anything from Marvel or DC anymore. I’m an Ed Brubaker junky, bests noir writer on the planet today, any medium.

Like most leftist "celebrities." They all know what's best for the rest of us.
