Browns want to interview Condoleezza Rice for head-coaching job
ESPN ^ | November 18, 2018 | Adam Schefter

Browns general manager John Dorsey said last week that he was opening to hiring a woman as Cleveland's next head coach, and there is one prominent name on the team's wish list to interview.

The Browns would like to interview former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for their head-coaching job, a league source tells ESPN.

If the Browns follow through on it, Rice would become the first woman ever to interview for an NFL head-coaching job.

Cleveland's interest in interviewing Rice comes at a time when women recently have moved into decision-making roles in men's professional sports. The Spurs hired Becky Hammon as an assistant coach, the Buffalo Bills hired Kathryn Smith as a quality control assistant, the Raiders hired Kelsey Martinez to their strength staff, and the 49ers hired Katie Sowers as an offensive assistant.

A potential interview hardly means the Browns will hire Rice, but they are interested in talking to her about the job and seeing what she could bring to the position and the organization.

"She's an amazing person," one Browns source told ESPN.

I’ve heard her talk of wanting to be the NFL Commissioner, but I think that’s a different skill-set than being a head coach.

It probably is, but given what has been happening with the teams in Florida and other parts of the South, she probably couldn’t do worse, and she might inspire them.

I like her a lot. The problem is is that Bush didn’t support her, or in fact anybody else in his government. Otherwise I think she would’ve been much more aggressive as SOS. She has some resentment towards the GOP because of the weakness of Bush.

But she might be a great coach!

I could see Condee kicking ass as an athletic director in a college sports program: raising funds, bringing talent together, etc. But shouldn’t a head coach have some experience coaching or playing football? I’m sure that Mike Ditka would make a lousy National Security Advisor, too.

Seeing as how the job of NFL Commissioner pays 50 - 60 million per year with lifetime health benefits for one’s entire family AND a private jet to fly you around, I can’t say I blame Condoleeza Rice for wanting that job.

We ALL want that job.

Really? Worse than Madeline Not-so-bright or Hitlery we’re as SOS or Brennen, or Comey at FBI. I am not so sure. I would give him a shot.

I do not think Condi would accept the job to be nothing more than a figurehead, so hiring her would mean redefining the head coach as a manager concerned primarily with senior personnel hires and supervision. I don't have a sense of how NFL teams operate nowadays. How much hands-on, on-field coaching does the head coach actually do? He has offensive and defensive coordinators, specialty coaches for every position, strength coaches, flexibility coaches, and probably eating coaches, not-beating-your-wife coaches, and picking your nose coaches, because so many of today's top athletes never learned these skills at home. Vince Lombardi would not recognize the coaching game today, and a modern NFL team might not be able to find room for a Lombardi.

Besides a manager, a head coach is supposed to be a motivator and a fall guy. Would Condi be able to motivate big, physical men three times her size? I suppose she can call them sissies, but would that work? The coach is also a fall guy, someone ready to take the blame -- and the heat -- when things go wrong. She's had practice at that.

There will soon be an opening for head coach at the University of Southern California. My neighbor’s cat would make a better head coach than the one they have now.

This is a great move by the Browns. The NFL has a stupid “diversity policy” that requires teams to interview minority candidates for front office and coaching positions. What better way to get around that requirement than by publicly announcing their interest in a notable black person who isn’t going to want the job anyway? They can even interview that dingbat Stacy Adams for a coaching position, since she isn’t going to be the governor of Georgia. She even looks like a retired offensive tackle.

Football is politicized, what better leader than an actual politician..?

And one who is actually pretty liberal, too.

And a woman.

She’s PERFECT for a totally f*cked up NFL, very appropriate.

Rush getting dissed by the NFL and prevented from owning a team was the BEST thing that every happened to him.

Besides getting fired by the Cardinals, that is.
