Ex-Chicago police commander charged with stealing $360,000 from Social Security

A former Chicago police commander who earned praise for overseeing big reductions in violence in one of the city’s most historically dangerous districts has been charged with stealing more than $360,000 in Social Security funds in a scheme lasting more than 23 years.

A one-page criminal information filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court accused Kenneth Johnson of bilking the Social Security Administration out of $363,064 from about June 1994 to November 2017.

Although the charge does not contain any more details, sources with knowledge of the investigation told the Chicago Tribune that Johnson is accused of stealing benefits intended for his mother. The charge also makes no mention of Johnson’s former role with the Police Department. The 32-year CPD veteran retired in August.

Johnson, 54, is scheduled to be arraigned later this month before U.S. District Judge Manish Shah, court records show.

Defendants charged by criminal information typically plead guilty.

Johnson’s attorney, Michael Clancy, said Wednesday that Johnson has cooperated with the federal investigation and consented to being charged by information rather than a grand jury indictment. Clancy also said there were no specific plans at this point for Johnson to plead guilty.

Since no plans to plead guilty etc one could imagine his pension will remain intact.

Just about everyone in or associated with the Chicago/Cook County government structure is a criminal of some sort....mostly involving money.

Johnson stole over $300,000 of mom’s SS money?

Pray tell what in the world kind of job did mom ever hold to qualify her to get that much in SS money?

He just kept cashing his deceased mother’s SS checks and forging her signature. Only took the government 17 years to figure it out.

He is about as close to prison as he will ever get. The system protects its own. All the lawyers are after is a guilty plea to enhance their resume when they go into private practice.

Mom’s SS monthly checks amounted to over $1,500.00 for 17 years.

Again to be getting $1,500 a month in 1994 from SS indicates mom must have had a PhD and very responsible position somewhere but I’m thinking mom probably had a government job but no doctor or lawyer.

Am I the only one questioning the math here?

Thought it was 17 years but anyway, mom must have had quite a professional job to qualify those SS numbers 23 years ago

Wonder if they checked voter files to see if he has been sending in her absentee ballot for the last 32 years.
