SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- If a "community grid" is chosen to replace Interstate 81 in downtown Syracuse, what will happen to the land that's now under the aging viaduct's shadow?
Whether it will be turned into green space or developed commercially is still an open question, according to city and state officials. A group of local architects is hoping to force the issue.
The local chapter of the American Institute of Architects estimated in a recent paper that 18.6 acres of land will be made available if the 1.4-mile elevated highway is taken down.
Taking the viaduct down and beefing up the existing street grid is one of several options state engineers are considering for the highway. Other options include rebuilding and widening the existing elevated highway or replacing the viaduct with a tunnel.
State officials have said they will decide which option will be selected early in 2019.
Syracuse officials, including Mayor Ben Walsh, hope the DOT will choose the street-level option, called the "community grid."
As one major selling point, the mayor's office has touted the potential property value increase for property owners and tax revenues for the city that could be generated by developing land made available due to the viaduct's demise.

Enemy territory anyway.
Both options are good for looks, neither will bring back the freedoms and rights of the residents.
which option will give Cuomo a literal heart attack while on the bathroom when no one else is home ?
What does this mean? The depiction in the article shows a regular road with traffic lights would be the “community grid” solution but what happens to the interstate highway? Does it move or is it just gone? And if so, do their rosy projections take into account the loss of traffic coming from the interstate itself?
Liberals should not be allowed to make any projections using numbers
Interstate traffic will take 481 around the city.
“Does it move or is it just gone?”
gone ... the ultimate “progressive”/leftist traffic “solution” ... utter insanity ...
I-81 would presumably go around the city using the current I-481 bypass.
The idea nobody has apparently thought of is to label the Boulevard and the remaining freeway sections I-81 Business (using the green-and-white shields) to lure more people downtown.
Nor any letters of the alphabet, for that matter.
I don’t believe any land bigger than a sugar cube is only going to be worth 14.5 million in New York. It sounds like somebody is devaluing the property massively.
“...what will happen to the land that’s now under the aging viaduct’s shadow?”
Why do I suspect the politician already know what is going to happen to this land? Somehow I believe money has already changed hands to make sure of the outcome. /s
The land under the 81 viaduct will sit unused for decades, as committees argue indefinitely about how the half-billion$ prove will be paid, and what will happen to that land. The viaduct itself will slowly deteriorate, making a city-spanning eyesore fraught with crime. Sections will be perpetually propped open temporarily for passage to the other side.
Syracuse should choose the kind and compassionate act, put homeless shelters on the existing viaduct, ladders would allow the homeless to panhandle on the street below.
? Isnt the viaduct already a city spanning eyesore fraught
with crime in its vicinity? Decades back i was already under the
impression it like other 50s elevated Interstate highways destroyed
communities
The know that the denser areas always draw liberals who let it degenerate into slums but who keep voting Dem....

??? This is Syracuse, not Manhattan.
One of the old maps at the City Waterworks Office had a sketch of a "Can of Worms" on the plat of that area....a recognizable name to old timers.
Maybe Cuomo can build a film studio there. Oh wait...he did...in Syracuse. $15 million spent on the building, and the State ended up selling it for $1.00 (one dollar). Included corruption, indictments, and convictions of everyone but Cuomo.
New York Spent $15 Million to Build a Film Hub. It Just Sold for $1
Imagine living to the south of Syracuse and having it take an extra half hour to get to the mall or the state fair. It is more than likely that those people just won’t go. There are many hospitals in that area including Upstate. Emergency transportation times will be increased considerably. That area has also become very dangerous as Syracuse is on its way to becoming Chicago.
When I went ESF/SU in 1984-85 you did not go under I81 on the south side of the city. Students were told not to venture under the highway. The closest dorm to 81 housed most of the upstate nursing students. It was called the convent because you could not enter the building beyond the lobby unless a resident came down and signed you in. It was also a dorm full of young women where they had rapes in the past. This was when the SW section of Syracuse on the other side of the highway was about 99% negros.
