WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD NOV 24, 2018
freerepublic | NOV 24, 2018 | greeneyes

Posted on 11/24/2018 9:42:24 AM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.

Greetings from Mo. We have sunshine!! Pretty mild day today following yesterdays deluge. Trying out my solar charger to see if it can recharge 4 D size batteries.

Got some leaves swept off the patio this AM. Wheat is about 2 inches tall, as is the garlic. Rye is about one inch tall- was beginning to wonder if it would ever sprout.

Lemon tree is looking better and starting to form buds for blooms. Tumeric is not looking good-maybe too cool in greenhouse, so I'm going to reorganize this week end so that I can bring those pots indoors.

Hope all is well with you and yours, and you are enjoying the holiday. Prayers up for all. Happy Turkey leftovers day. God Bless.

Right on! Over here in Upstate NY (Finger Lakes region) it went down to ZERO Thurs night but we survived it... now it’s just around 32 and raining, so we’re hoping the frozen-rain ice layer doesn’t get too thick. Tomorrow warmer... maybe it’ll melt some of the foot and a half of snow from a week ago.

Ms. Dayglored has a bunch of plants indoors for safekeeping over Winter; sure hope the ones outside make it through!

She says, “Send me a greenhouse!!”

Several days ago, I forgot to keep the water in the heated hose trinkling during the night. It finally thawed, today! Carrying a bucket of water out every evening isn’t my idea of fun.

Still haven’t wrapped the bee hive. Need to fill the feeder and maybe add another pollen patty and wrapt, tomorrow, while we are having a heat wave (Low 40s)!

UhOh. Yes, I do hate hauling water too. At least it finally thawed. LOL

Me too, but that’s not too likely. We will have some days that are warmer, but the overall average for the next several years is supposed to be cooler, cooler, colder.

We’re looking at some snow later this evening into tomorrow. If it goes SOUTH, no problem - if it hits us - it could get ugly, quick!

I had a FABULOUS crop of ‘Puffy Pop’ popcorn this season and I just started shelling it. 1 cob down, 67 to go, LOL!

I’m going to wrap three ears together in a nice cello bag and tie with raffia and give some as Christmas Gifts this season. They can shell their own d@mn popcorn! :)

(Just start a row with a spoon - easy-peasy, just TIME consuming. Good evening project while watching a movie...)

I have salad greens growing under lights in the house; kind of a treat, actually.

My ‘Thanksgiving’ Cactus is in full bloom - Peach, really pretty right now.

Still can’t figure out how to post pictures, which annoys me to no end!

Had a traditional Thanksgiving Meal with family & friends on Thursday; still in a Food Coma from that, though I have Elk steaks marinating and will grill and serve them with potatoes from our garden and some corn from the store and a salad made from the greens mentioned above. ;)

Not QUITE in the mood to decorate for Christmas, yet, but I am listening to Christmas Music! :)

We got a nice rain yesterday here in Central Missouri. Sunny and warm today. Rain and maybe snow on the way for tomorrow.

Not much of anything going on in the garden at the moment. I should finish cleaning up the mess from last season, but after foundering myself on Thanksgiving dinner yesterday I'm not feeling too motivated for much of anything today.

Mrs. Augie and I did do some cleanup in the yard on Thanksgiving day, and we transplanted the burr oak seedling that grew from an acorn I carried home last fall. I've been packing them home for years trying to get one to grow and finally one sprouted. I let it grow all summer in the kitchen garden so it would get a good start, and I'm hopeful that it will thrive going forward.

I had the day off Wednesday, and finished up putting cedars in the pond. I now have a nice line of brush on the dropoff from shallow to deep that runs through the north half of the basin. Still need to add more crushed limestone to the shallow water part of the basin, but mostly now it just needs water.

Those ears of corn will look very pretty.

We had Thanksgiving at my youngest daughter’s so I had an easy day. I only had to make mashed potatoes and potatoes augraten. She did the rest-I bought the turkey and some of the ingredients.

Elk steaks sounds interesting. We got fried chicken from the deli about a half hour ago. So I’m stuffed.

I spent most of the week cleaning and getting ready for Thanksgiving. Today I swept one of the patios. Tomorrow I’ll do another one. Also cleaned a couple Refrigerator shelves.

So at least I didn’t waste the whole day, but I usually don’t do much on Saturdays. Tomorrow I’ll also tackle sorting and cleaning out some kitchen drawers that need reorganizing.

Looking forward to seeing water in that pond.

Most of my "gardening" this week has consisted of filling out the form to be a Baker Creek grower again. Even with the crop failures I had this last year, I loved it.

I'm about halfway through shelling beans for the year. I think I've got about 6 pounds of Beefy Resilient so far.

I don't think I've posted a picture of my newest chicken yet:

She was found wandering around in a busy intersection. It took me 2 hours of plying her with treats to get her close enough to catch with a fishing net, but once I caught her she just snuggled into my arms like she belonged there. We posted pictures and asked around for a few weeks looking for her owners, but nobody stepped forward, so I guess she's mine now. The other hens aren't too fond of her, but they'll get used to each other eventually. She's such a pretty girl, I can't imagine anyone not wanting to keep her!

We had 3 days of rain for a total of 3 1/2 inches after 45 day of nada and now I hope my vetch comes up before the weeds do. The Chinese garlic is all up about 2 to 3 inches but no German Red yet. I wish I could post photos but I haven’t figured out the glitch in my new Fotki account (@$%^&*(&^$%#@!)! Lady Bender prepared a perfect Thanksgiving dinner for 15 people and I had my fourth meal tonight...

Spent a week in Seattle enjoying all the red and orange leaves, the cold mist, and the sound of seagulls. Delightful!
