Reminds me of the scene from the TV show “Jericho” where the kids were using dead cell phones for stickball.
Supposedly after an EMP hit us only 10% of the entire US population would survive one year later.

The Mueller investigation would still be going on.
The MAD doctrine has protected the nuclear club countries from an exchange since the 50s. Two or three nukes launched from a freighter in the Gulf of Mexico using old scuds would cripple the USA and result in tens of millions of eventual deaths. The scariest part is we possibly wouldnt know who did it. With this scenario you lose your deterrent capability because you cant retaliate.
I read that book. The premise was interesting (a better book, IMHO, is “Alas Babylon,” which was written in, I think, the 1950s or early 1960s); however, Forstchen’s habit of having his characters break into uncontrolled weeping over singing old show tunes and other such maudlin swill ruined the story for me.
“Anybody know anything about the group that sponsored this? “
I don’t even know their name.
But you can bet they have found a way to get paid from it.
There is no plausible man-made EMP that would take out the US, or the entire east coast for that matter.
Hundreds of megatons at 300 miles up? Maybe.
But nobody has bombs that big and very, very few have the lift capacity to get it that high. Certainly not the Norklandians or Iran.
But an enormous solar flare could do it. I stress enormous.
The UCS supports...the enactment of state laws to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks, deep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, as well as national and international action to combat climate change...The UCS supports a national renewable energy standard which would require utilities to produce a certain percentage of their energy from sources such as wind power, solar energy...The UCS has also endorsed the Forests Now Declaration, which calls for new market based mechanism to protect forests, as the group has recognised the importance of curbing deforestation to tackle climate change.[15] The group also supports governmental incentives for people who want to preserve undeveloped land instead of selling it to developers,...They also oppose the use of space weapons, and work on reducing the number of nuclear weapons around the world.
“but any nation with an icbm and tactical nuke could destroy us or any other country with one or two EMPs”
Nonsense.
Read it.
Nor much on my interests but did have some.
Most large cities only have weeks worth of supplies, NYC has only 3 days. The Gimme dat zombies will be hungry.
Use of an EMP weapon will trigger a full on nuclear war ... unless a Democrat is President, then we will just absorb it and apologize.
Steam powered cars, horse drawn carriages, bikes, trikes, and velomobiles. Of course these would be limited in range to the endurance of the motive power.
Nothing personal but that book was an exercise fear mongering with no real basis in science at all
So the power goes out for a week
more like years. the turbines are made in Norway I think - they are usually back ordered by a number of years ... which is how long it will take to get some ordered, then there is shipping and installation so add more years ...
That they want more money?
Alas Babylon was definitely a better written book. I found the Forstchen scenario more terrifying and a more plausible potential threat today.
Nuclear emp effects require long lines to attenuate the voltage surge.
A few of the declared nuclear powers have the capability to possibly do some damaged on a regional basis but cars, generators, small electronics are not going to just be zapped/
Correct.
Sorry my understanding is that there is a Cascade effect if the nuke detonates over the atmosphere. So a regular sized nuke can have a continental effect.
“Sorry my understanding is that there is a Cascade effect if the nuke detonates over the atmosphere. “
That must be another BS term developed by those hoping to get paid due to the ignorance of most people about nukes and EMP.
How do you reset it? The infrastructure is wrecked. The US has locomotives stock piled for this type of calamity but you have to clear the burnt out locomotives first and the trains the were pulling. That takes time that the cities don’t have.
