‘Never Home Alone’ Review: The Critters Chez Nous
WSJ ^ | 28 Nov 2018 | Lisa Margonelli

Once upon a time, we lived in leaf huts, with interiors that looked a lot like our outdoor environment. Soon we moved to round houses, then square houses and finally to air-tight apartments in cities. Now we close our windows, use products that claim to kill 99% of germs and have unknowingly domesticated bedbugs—so they adjust their workdays around ours. Our homes no longer resemble the garden outside but have a weird human-centered microbial signature that is also found on the International Space Station, and that’s not a good thing. The problem, according to Mr. Dunn, “is not what is present but instead what is absent.

In many American homes, water is treated with chlorine and chloramine, which kill pathogens but not mycobacteria, a genus that includes the cause of tuberculosis. Meanwhile, in homes with water drawn from wells, nonharmful microbes flourish, including mycobacteria’s natural competitors. By wiping out all the other bacteria in chlorinated water, we create environments where troublesome microbes thrive and even evolve.

In a study of 1,000 houses in the U.S., Mr. Dunn’s team found 80,000 kinds of bacteria and archaea hidden inside

Little Miss Muffet Sat on a tuffet,

Eating her curds and whey;

Along came a spider,

Who sat down beside her,

And frightened Miss Muffet away.

One day the ‘bug bomb” is going to “cook off” and a large part of humanity will disappear.

Think “Black Death” in the Middle Ages where upwards of a quarter of the population died and left vast farms and even small towns vacated.

It’s coming as we kill all the germs that used to “beef up” our resistance to their nearest kin.

That’s why you let you kids eat dirt.

As someone who grew up on a ranch-and has always chosen to live in the country, even if it meant a long commute to work-I’m delighted to see what people like me have always believed shown to be true. Drinking well water, living with pets, around livestock, trees, grass, not using chemical pesticides or weedkillers and eating fresh natural food is healthy imagine that...

My guy still thinks I’m weird because I refuse to spend much time at his place in the city, and never overnight there in Winter, because the air full of vehicle exhaust, the water with too much chlorine, the stale indoor air-he never, ever opens windows, going from A/C to too-hot central heat without a break makes me feel ill every time I do-and I bring and fix my own fresh food-I refuse to eat the processed crap he keeps around-really love the man, but the whole atmosphere where he lives like poison to a person used to a fresh, natural environment...

That’s what freeper Mother Abigail was telling us a few years back. Retired CDC scientist. She said that a hybrid flu is the killer that can inflict a near-extinction event.
