Maybe he was really just making stuff up to attract deep pocket investors. That happens sometimes.
There was an American company that claimed to have a machine that could read your state of health via a small drop of blood. The company venture was headed by a young attractive blonde woman. She knew just enough about science to pull it off. She talked a good game.
They attracted many, many wealthy investors. They were rolling in the dough for a while, and then, the bottom dropped out. Her secret of deceit became public information.
I think she still walks free to this day, perhaps all due to Beauty Privilege.
Yeah, she got her investors for almost $1B, but she supposedly had to give it back, which for some reason I doubt happened. I know, I’m too cynical.

He moved in with the guy who powers his house by cold fusion.
“I’m workin’ on it! Okay?” She will be saying, 35 years from now.
It will be like me owing the IRS. I may never pay every penny back, plus late fees and interest compounded. All I really have to do is to keep mailing in my tiny medicine dropper of a monthly payment without fail.
That will keep the vultures from my door. Maybe that’s what she plans to do it she can get away with it.

Back around there was a cult that claimed they had cloned a child and they would soon debut him to the world. They got a lot of media coverage and problem a couple 100k in speaking fees.

I would more likely believe that he faked the experiment and got caught.
