I Was Kicked Off Stage by College Students. Did I Deserve It?
NY Times ^ | December 7, 2018 | Nimesh Patel

Posted on 12/10/2018 8:20:03 AM PST by C19fan

I’ve experienced a lot of strange things while performing comedy: Rosario Dawson made fun of me while I was bombing in front of hundreds of Bernie Sanders fans. I once had to tell the crowd mid-show that the venue was closing for an impromptu health inspection. On Nov. 30, I performed stand-up as part of an annual event put on by the Asian-American Alliance at Columbia, and about 20 minutes into the show, my microphone was cut off.

It wasn’t because of some fire code violation, or because some violently drunk heckler and I were about to fistfight. It was because three student organizers came onstage and politely told me they were going in a different direction with the next 30 minutes of my remaining time after deciding my material was offensive.

Mr. Patel should have listened to Seinfeld. He was written off performing for college students for this very reason.

He should have quickly followed quickly with a “Trump has sex with Ivanka” joke.

The Campus Leftists would have loved him, and any racial stuff would have immediately been forgotten.

This article, oddly, defends the snowflakes in recognition of a “small group” with the bullhorn. So it is hallow in it’s rebuke of sensitive college kids (IMO).

I would then add, if he must perform for College Audiences, as it is how he makes his living, he should be more judicious about where he will sell his product, humor. Liberals are negative miserable people. The “humor” they appreciate is NOT the norm of intellectual people.

The likes of Jerry Seinfeld and Dennis Miller do pretty intellectual humor. Liberals are not intellectuals either. So they are stupid and oversensitive. It’s hard to make childish crybabies laugh with anything but fart jokes.

These liberals love the mob until it comes for them.

No sympathy.

We live in a new sensitized world. A world were anything can be offense to somebody. There was a time when we had hard skin, we were raised tough because life was. Everything in life had to be earned, the free stuff wasn’t there. Today we are dealing with the “Wussy” generation, I wish you luck with that. Try not to hurt their feelings, it doesn’t take much to set off the whining.

He just couldn’t resist the “orange man bad” throwaway line.

Comments like that had a small element of comedic value two years ago and for the first couple thousand tellings. Now it’s just tired, juvenile, virtue-signalling pap.

Now it’s just tired, juvenile, virtue-signalling pap.

1) It's simple, effective messaging to mock leftists' histrionics surrounding all things Trump.

2) You apparently have no idea what "virtue-signalling" means.

Columbia is a private university. No state actors involved so no 14th Amendment problems. Student response comparable to Christian baker not wanting to bake cake because of convictions.

Insights welcome.

Yes you do deserve it.

All you “comics” agreed to self censor when it came to Obama. Did you think they would stop after that? You already let that genie out of the bottle and deserve whatever happens to you.

Curious if you read the article and my comment in relation to it.

I was referring to this: "and I’ve realized that this generalization about college students is not unlike racists thinking every brown person is a terrorist, or people thinking that every orange-faced, yellow-haired person is a lying idiot. Most brown people have yet to blow anything up, and most orange-faced yellow-haired people are decent Floridians."

And in response to these obvious references to the President, I said:

"He just couldn’t resist the “orange man bad” throwaway line.

Comments like that had a small element of comedic value two years ago and for the first couple thousand tellings. Now it’s just tired, juvenile, virtue-signalling pap."

Try as I might, I don't see how the above by the cited comedian is " simple, effective messaging to mock leftists' histrionics surrounding all things Trump" or how my comments demonstrate that I "have no idea what "virtue-signalling" means.

But if you still think that's the case, please elaborate for my enlightenment.

“Orange Man Bad” is frequently used on social media to mock leftists.

And it’s always hilarious.

No. If what I read on Daily Caller was right the audience was fine with it even roaring with laughter. They got all confused and are demanding money back after the set was cut short. You were interrupted and called out which confused the crowd as they saw you being forced offstage just for doing your usual routine.

A lawsuit would be more effective than an op-ed.

But the author’s only real problem with left-wing totalitarianism is that it inconvenienced him personally, isn’t it? So he will whine while waiving his civil rights.

If that university takes federal dollars - and there are very very few which don’t - it is public for the purposes of the First Amendment, and those who shut him down based on the content of his performance are liable, as well as those who empowered them.

There are state actors all over the place with Columbia. Public partnerships, public funding for students, government grants, and so on.

The only government-independent institutions are a handful of very conservative ones that accept no government subsidies whatsoever.
