I was watching "Three Days of the Condor", a 70's political thriller. There is a scene where a CIA director (John Houseman) is pondering possible reasons that Robert Redford's character has gone rogue.
In the original, Houseman says "For example, has he gone into business for himself? Was he turned around? Does someone operate him? Homosexual? Broke? Vulnerable? Could he be a soldier of fortune?"
In the version on FIOS On-demand, the word "homosexual" has been clumsily edited to "sexual".
Sickening.
CONDOR still holds up well as a film, IMO. That is a truly stupid edit for someone to try and pull off.
This has been going on for years. A lot of people collecting movies for their personal collection will sometimes buy the vhs version because later versions were sanitized or the music changed because licensing agreements didn’t cover dvd versions (for example, Willy Nelson sings the opening song in the original movie and on the vhs version of “The Electric Horseman,” but an unnamed singer sings it on the dvd release).
That was really bugging someone for forty years.
For such a top notch captivating movie it sure deserved a better ending. It’s like watching a perfect game in bowling and the very last toss goes in the guttter. I still can’t fathom how that could of happened.
As I recall, the most famous history of WWII - Shirer’s Rise & Fall of the Third Reich - uses “perversion” in place of “homosexuality” many places, and “pervert” for “homosexual”. I imagine that by now, all libraries have been scrubbed of the original 1950s-published version, and replaced with a sanitized snowflake version of the book.
Never fear! In due time, that will be re-edited to "heterosexual."
Regards,
Yeah, unfortunately; it’s very hard to get the “original” of anything. But also, there are many different versions of so many movies.
Heck, they even edit Judge Judy on youtube. It’s ridiculous. Don’t want to offend any (fill-in) the blank.
Changing history.
Substituting lies for truth.
Changing names of towns, regions, buildings, streets.
Editing out those not in favor in old photos and art.
Editing in the Glorious Leader or the Glorious Cause everywhere.
Pulling down old monuments.
Everyone knows they are lies. Everyone bends knee to those lies.
A practice found in every totalitarian state.
Refuse to collaborate.
Resist.
That’s so ‘1984.’
“...a dead girl or a live boy...”
I still enjoy “Three Days of the Condor” on the rare occasion of it being on TV/Cable...but it is becoming a bit dated.
That said...
Earlier this year ATT’s “Audience” channel had a 10 episode series, “Condor”, that was based on the movie. It was actually quite entertaining and, in some aspects, better than the movie. A season 2 is scheduled.
That is still great comedy.
Snowflake editing would render the movie down to about 2 scenes.
What ending would you have given it?
This movie is good for today’s times.
John Houseman’s character could be Brennan or Clapper, and represents the Deep State. Robert Redford could be Seth Rich (too bad he didn’t survive). They’d stop at NOTHING to keep control and ruin Trump, just as they had no morals in the movie’s depiction.
Something else that makes me wonder about this movie...
Was the mailman in the beginning scenes John Kasick’s father?
3 Days of the Pittsburgh Condors (ABA hoops team)?
