Till Tuesday I thought it was Donald Trump who had the most bungled transition in history.
It turns out it was Phil Murphy. We learned that at a legislative hearing Tuesday into the allegations of rape leveled against one of his ex-staffers by one of his current staffers.
The current staffer is Katie Brennan of the Housing and Mortgage Finance Authority. In October, the Wall Street Journal published her allegations that she had been raped during the 2017 gubernatorial campaign by Al Alvarez, who was at the time the campaigns Hispanic/Latino outreach director.
That article prompted Alvarez to resign his $140,000-a-year job as deputy chief of staff for the Schools Development Authority. But why did he get that job in the first place?
That was the topic of the day and it wasnt a good day for Murphy. Instead of producing answers, the hearing just produced more questions for the committee as it continues into next year.
The first big question came in the testimony of Justin Braz, the deputy chief for legislative affairs who is a good friend of Brennan. Braz testified that Brennan called him on the night of the alleged assault in April of last year.
He met with her the next day and she appeared distraught, he said. He said he believed her account that she had been sexually assaulted by Alvarez after she let him into her apartment on the pretext that he had to use the bathroom.
